• Table Grid Lines (Word 2002)

I did a letter and used a table format at the end to list names in columns. I want to hide the grid lines so the names just show. I tried the “hide grid” under one of the pull downs but it did not make the lines disappear. Any ideas?

Are you certain that you set the table to have no borders? I was able (in Word 97) to show/hide the gridlines with no noticeable difference until I set the table borders to NONE.

And just to add my 2cents worth, I think table borders are switched on (to a single “thin” line) by default (at least in 97/ 2000).

As smerdonk pointed out, you also have to take cell borders into account.

Grid lines are only visible on screen, not on the printed document. Whether you show or hide them is a personal, application-wide setting – if you turn them off, and give the document to somebody else, that user will see grid lines if (s)he has them turned on. If you turn them off, the on screen document looks more like the printed document, but it makes it hard to see where a table begins and ends.

Cell borders are visible on screen and on the printed document. They can be set for each border individually, and they are stored with the document.

Just to add that if they are true borders, you can turn them off by having the cursor anywhere in the table & pressing Alt+Ctrl+U (which is/was TableUpdateAutoFormat). I should mention that it worked in Word 97 & 2000, but I don’t have 2002 to test.

        Phil,

This is just to confirm that Ctrl+Alt+U still works in Word 2002.

In Word 2000, you have to select the table and then select “Format”, “Borders & Shading”, and select none. I don’t know if it is the same for Word 2002.

        Hi Jan:
You can also use Alt+Ctrl+U without selecting the table. See post 252217.
        Cheers,

Thanks, Phil. I read you post after I had posted my reply. I always use keyboard shortcuts when possible. The keyboard is so much faster than the mouse.
