I’ve had this happen at times in Access 97 and now sometimes in 2000, so I’m finally getting around to asking why… As I set the tab index for my fields on a form, beginning with 0, 1, 2…. they begin to revert back to their original number. The only way to change them at this point is to use the Tab Order box from the View menu. I’ve tried compacting without any luck. I’d really like to know why it’s doing this, and perhaps how to get it to work correctly.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

If you change tab indexes manually, you will run into this because the indexes are dynamically reshuffled to accommodate the value you changed. I’ve done this in code, but it’s much easier and more reliable to use the View–>Tab Order dialog, so why bother?

Another good reason to assign meaningful names to your controls ๐Ÿ™‚

Does your form use tabbed pages?

I always set tab order using the indexes, and very occasionaly have this problem, and I suspect that it happens on tabbed pages. (It doesn’t happen often enough for me to be sure)
I reckon that when you add some new controls to an existing form and you want to slot them into the tab order, the indices are by far the easiest way to do it, and 99% of the time they work perfectly.
