Can someone please tell me how to configure Office 2002 (running Win XP Pro) so the programs run in the systray instead of showing on the taskbar?

Natively, Office XP won’t do that. Outlook XP can do that with a tweak to the registry or by downloading the must-have Attachment Options by Ken Slovak. There are also third party utilities that will allow you to stuff windows of any kind into the system tray – although I can’t recommend any because I don’t use them.

I use a utility called TrayIt! to stuff programs into the systray, but even though the utility works well, for some programs it’s better than others. Have you tried the XP feature that allows grouping icons when the task bar gets full? It takes some getting used to, but reduces clutter a lot.

Plus, XP has the feature for hiding systray icons that are not active, so you’d have to watch for interactions between that and any systray utility you’re running.

I haven’t heard of TrayIt!, but I’ll check it out.

I do use the group icons and the hide inactive icons features. The group icons feature isn’t bad until I get a number of webpages in IE from the same website (page names not distinguishable enough to quickly figure out), then it takes me awhile to figure out which one I want (usually have to click on a few pages before I find the one I want again).

One of the nicest things about the Mozilla browser that I LOVE is tabbed browsing. You can have several browser windows open, all in ONE instance of Mozilla as far as the taskbar is concerned. It really cuts down on clutter for me. I think I remember reading that the SP-1 version update of Internet Explorer will have tabbed browsing capabilities. Can anyone confirm that? One way or the other, I think you ought to try tabbed browsing instead of (or in addition to) stuffing apps in the tray.

My apologies, Teresa! I’ve been looking and looking for what I THOUGHT I saw and I think it was the press release for Netscape 7 rather than IE. Sorry about that! But, you could always switch. I think tabbed browsing is the greatest thing to come along for quite awhile…..

I’ve been using Opera as a test browser for a while now. They’ve had MDI browsing for a while (Multiple browser windows in one), and added tabbed windows in 6.0. Opera’s also the quickest of the browsers as far as I can tell, is mostly standards compliant, and does a decent job of page rendering even with CSS.

I second the motion – no tabbed browsing. The method for handling downloads has very obviously changed, you now get an explicit message when downloading specific file types. Actually, that’s a welcome change, because anyone who pauses to read the message (I’m thinking along the lines of folks who are not internet junkies) will have a better understanding of the inherent dangers in downloading EXE files (and others).

I use Netcaptor for tabbed browsing in IE6. paid version seems stable, and noticably improves the browsing experiance. I like having all tabs come up with the contents that were there when the program was last shut down. Also has pop-up blocking. MS should license this one! WhenI do a search, I immediately open a tab for each interesting hit. This elliminates the problem of going far down a dead end and then not being able to get back to the original search.
