What about just typing winver in the run box? The machine I’m using has pro and getting the file from the other is a bother, but basically google the OS build. I’d be surprised if it changed home to pro – it reflects more the updates on the system.

      Hi Razz:

I’ve installed my August 2022 Patch Tuesday updates (released 09-Aug-2022) and this is copied from Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications on my Win 10 Pro machine:

      Edition Windows 10 Pro
      Version 21H2
      Installed on ‎20-‎Jan-‎2021
      OS build 19044.1889
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4180.0

As oldguy noted, if I open a Run dialog box (Windows+R keys) and entering winver it also shows:

      Win-10-Pro-v21H2-winver-28-Aug-2022

      Thanks @lmacri

Trying to work through an error code 0x80070005. It is just going to take time. Probably should just retire the unit, or maybe I can use it as a monitor screen.

Trying to work through an error code 0x80070005.

Exactly when are you getting the error code, while installing a monthly update, or when trying to launch the Run dialog box to run the Winver command?

Probably should just retire the unit…

Just for clarity’s sake, which unit are you referring to, the Asus or the Lenovo?

To amplify @lmacri ‘s info above, the version number for 21H2 with the August monthly update installed is, as shown in the post, 19044.1889.

BUT, the basic build number for Windows 10 version 21H2 is 19044.XXXX, where the XXXX represents any number after the 19044 part of the build number. The last four digits of the build number change with every monthly update that’s released.

SO, if you do either one of the procedures mentioned in @imacri ‘s post above, your build number will start with 19044 if you’re on ANY version of Windows 10 21H2.

          Just for info.

I have now completed the process today. Removing the AV and Firewalls and rebooting seemed to have done the trick.

However not before going through some unusual details summarised by this montage.

So this work was done over 28 and then morning of the 29th Aug.

Having removed AV, firewall and rebooted, the reboot led to the display of update checking and installing leading then to the Windows Update page as illustrated here, some of which makes no sense. After shutdown a few times the final position is that the version now indicated is 19044.1889. However the date of installation is clearly wrong as it was installed 28 Aug 2022.

If you update using WUmgr not all updates will register with Update History.

I’d go for installing the latest SSU and try again. Unfortunately the latest is included in the monthly update (so you might as well get the rather large package and extract and install the SSU first as per the instructions

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/august-9-2022-kb5016616-os-builds-19042-1889-19043-1889-and-19044-1889-67412989-3b5f-4443-89b4-f743382ab970

alternatively just trying to install the latest published stand alone SSU might reset something without the whole stopping services / deleting files / praying thing.. this could help if your system has dropped way behind on updates.

      https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/en-us/vulnerability/ADV990001

Just in case might be worth checking the drive with crystaldiskinfo as localising a large update to install could fall foul of a drive media issue which Windows “fixes” later..

      Hi Razz:

      What antivirus do you use?

I usually recommend that users with a Win 8.1 or higher OS should disable the Fast Startup power option (also known as hybrid boot-up / hybrid shutdown) as instructed in Option 1 of the TenForums tutorial How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 and then re-boot their computer to ensure this Windows feature is turned off. Fast Startup is enabled by default but it can interfere with the loading of services and drivers of third-party software at boot-up (especially antivirus and anti-malware programs that load components deep in the Windows kernel) and cause unexpected problems.  Microsoft has also acknowledged that Fast Startup can even interfere with Windows Update – see the MS support article Updates May Not Be Installed With Fast Startup in Windows 10. It’s possible you had a pending update that required a proper restart of your OS before the installation could run to completion, and disabling Fast Startup and re-booting a few times might help with that.

      Win-10-v21H1-Power-Options-Turn-Off-Fast-Startup-27-Nov-2021

Warning: After Fast Startup is disabled, your first system restart might be slow If you have Windows updates pending installation. Be patient and allow the installation(s) to run to completion.
