Ran this, it took maybe 5-10 minutes to install and then nothing. I thought this was supposed to be a test. I cannot find anywhere where I am supposed to run something after the install. My C: drive increased by around 6 GB so something happened somewhere.

    Thanks for any help

The download for that version of SURT is 538MB but it’s been a while since I last ran it on my Win 7 laptop, but you should have gotten something up on the screen.

Give me a few mins while I download it and run it again to refresh my memory.

If it has done anything then look in C:WindowsLogsCBS to see if there’s a Checksur log.

If there is, double click on it to see what it reports.

It seems to be having problems installing so this could take a while – will get back when I have something to report.

It should have done its job automatically during install, and replaced incorrect data, but instructions for checking logs are here:

Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool

From the opening post I don’t think idb even saw those, but an increase of 6GB ?

I think there’s only about a GB of updates all told.

I still can’t get it to install on my Win 7 with it disconnected from the Internet and Norton disabled.

Well the install went from a flashing cursor with nothing on the progress bar to Installation Complete.

If this is what idb got then see what the Checksur log has to report.

Thanks for the replys. I opened the checksur log and all I could find was some entries for CSI Payload File Missing. These seemed to relate to some installed media files I deleted that served no value such as Kalimba.mp3 and some .jpg and .wmv files bundled with Windows. These were not replaced.

Also a missing .dll file: SampleRes.dll which shows up in the system, but does not seem to have been recently added. I ran this in an attempt to perhaps correct the issue I am having with installing any version of .net framework version 4.6x. Doubt if this will help now. I have tried all of the fixes unless there are some obscure ones I could not find.

What error code are you getting and have you tried the .NET Framework Repair Tool which you leave running while trying the download.

I will have to try and run it again to get the error log. I have done the repair tool and the cleanup tool. The cleanup tool resulted in my not being able to install version 4.5.2 which was previously installed successfullyor any version of 4.6x . I recovered 4.5.2 with a month old image.

I posted this issue awhile back and did all of those and decided to try the readiness update tool. I do not seem to be the only person with this issue as researched on the net. Strange that it updated fine on my desktop, but will not on my laptop.

      Here is the log:
      46963-New-Text-Document

Have all other updates installed okay on the laptop ?

    • #1593683

No other issues. I did a repair install of 4.5.2 and then ran the framework repair tool. Still no luck with 4.6.2, same error.

As you have no other update problems then it won’t be because of your AV program.

These cmds may or not work but did you try the 4.6.2 install before you reinstalled 4.5.2 after you had lost it ?

You can copy & paste these cmds to the admin cmd prompt where they’ll auto run other than perhaps the last where you will need to press enter – the SoftwareDistribution cmd will remove the update history, but you can repeat the cmds with that cmd reversed if they don’t resolve.

      net stop wuauserv

      net stop cryptSvc

      net stop bits

      net stop msiserver

      ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

      ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old

      net start wuauserv

      net start cryptSvc

      net start bits

      net start msiserver

      exit

Strange when I installed this it increased my drive size by 6 GB, but I cannot find it in the installed updates. Does not appear to have done anything.

    • #1593689

Cannot remember that far back. I more than likely did them in order as they came out. Meaning, 4.6.1 or 4.6.0 came after 4.5.2 and the 4.6.2 came later. None of the 4.6x installed. I had to install a backup image to get 4.5.2 back after doing the cleanup tool.

    • #1593723

Have you tried those commands as in my last post ?

As 4.6.2 supersedes all v4 then create a restore point, uninstall 4.5.2 then try 4.6.2 again.

Found an obscure post by someone who was having the same trouble as me. They solved it by running the program from the extracted files folder. I could not find the file they suggested, so I tried the most likely looking installer and it appears to have worked. The installer said removing older version and then made me restart. Now when I go to control panel/programs, I see 4.6.2 listed and not 4.5.2. Another utility showed the same thing. Will see if it works when I use the program that celled for it. Thanks for any help.

So was that similar to my last suggestion ?

    • #1593823

No, I was saving that for last as I was leery of uninstalling 4.5.2 as I could not reinstall it from a previous experience. I am not that comfortable working with DOS, but that seems to be a nice way to temporarily remove the installed updates history if I ever need to do it. Thanks for the suggestion.

If that is all you want to do with those cmds then you can leave out the catroot2 one.
