I have been trying to remove a couple of of icons from my System Tray.

One is labeled SB AudioPCI 64D Mixer. It’s unnecessary because I get the same thing by double clicking on the Volume icon. The other is referred to as 640×480 High Color (16 bit). The same information is available by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing Properties.

You can’t drag these icons out of the System Tray. I’ve also tried going to Run on the Start menu, which comes up with the Msconfig file, but neither of the above items is listed under the Startup tab.

Is there a simple way of getting rid of stuff from the System Tray. Mine is becoming more and more cluttered with unnecessary icons.

Go to Start/Run & type msconfig, then press . Go to the startup screen & uncheck everything that you don’t want to start at bootup.

Many programs put their icons in the systray without asking. However, bringing up their Options or Settings or Preferences, etc. tab will allow you to uncheck their default settings, which include something like “start when windows starts” & “put icon in systray”.

Then, for a final solution for those icons that you want in the systray, but don’t want to see them, get TrayManager Version 2 at

That mixer is a stubborn [censored].
I tried MSCONFIG and wound up with multiple entries for the mixer proggie STARTER.EXE. Even zapped the registry entries directly, only to have them come back upon reboot.

So I gave up and hide the thing with Tray Manager. Occassionally, it’s even useful.

http://www.pcmag.com has a utility Startup Cop that is very useful for disabling programs that you don’t want to start up on boot, but don’t want to remove, or take the chance of removing, from the registry, win.ini, or other locations.

As to that screen settings icon – should be easy to get rid of. Right click on your desktop and click Properties. On the Settings tab, click the Advanced button. Right under the Font Size drop-down you’ll see a checkbox that says “show settings icon on task bar”. Uncheck the box and the icon should disappear.
