Thank you for the site. Have done everything suggested and still cannot restore….
eventvwr.msc tells me it couldn’t restore….

• #1453529

 “eventvwr.msc” is “Event Viewer”, “rstrui.exe” is “System Restore”.

• #1453544

: “eventvwr.msc” is “Event Viewer”, “rstrui.exe” is “System Restore”.

Confused: one of the site’s suggestions was
Run, type eventvwr.msc /s in the Open box, and then press Enter.
Click the System category.
Click the Source tab to sort by name, and then look for “sr” or “srservice.” Double-click each of these services, and then evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.

Would you pls explain your post. Thank you

What happens when you try to run System Restore?

• #1453549

As I said in original post, they all fail. Tried at least 6 different days…. Tried Safe Mode, tried turning off AV….

• #1453550

Oh. I thought you were trying to create a Restore point, not restore one.

So what you’re saying then is System Restore is running okay but all of your Restore points are no good?

• #1453653

Hi –

Assuming it’s running ok since it tells me I cannot create a Restore point. Have tried many different dates…Thanks for your continued postings.

• #1453655

What does the date have to do with creating a Restore point?

A date is not required to “Create” a Restore point, it’s only needed when you go to “Restore” one that has already been created.
Create = to make or produce (something) : to cause (something new) to exist.

Restore = to put or bring (something) back into existence or use.
1) If you’re running a Norton (Symantec) product, see this page: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v51118464_EndUserProfile_en_us

2) If you’re getting an error message, what is it?

• #1453661

The error is that System Restore could not be restored to that date.
Not running any Norton product.

Try disabling your AntiVirus and try again. During a restoration, an active antivirus program scans for infected files. If the antivirus program detects any infected files, the antivirus program tries to modify, move, or delete the infected files. If the antivirus program successfully cleans the infected files, System Restore restores the cleaned files. However, if the antivirus software cannot clean a file, the antivirus software deletes or quarantines the file. As a result, the restoration does not work because these actions to the file cause an inconsistent restoration state. As a result, System Restore reverts to the state immediately before the restoration.

As I said in original post, I did disable my AV – and also tried to restore while in safe mode.

• #1453905

I tried restoring on my XP many times and never got it to work. I even have a VB Script file that made restore points and they would never work.

• #1453668

Then the restore points are corrupted and need to be deleted. To do that, go into My Computer, Properties, System Restore Tab and turn off System Restore. Reboot, turn System Restore back on and it’ll automatically make a new restore point.

• #1453669

I understand that, but then that will destroy all prior points and leave only the current one. Is that correct? I did want to restore to a previous point….

• #1453767

Yes, you are correct.

There is no substitute for regular full partition backups.

Asus N53SM & N53SN 64-bit laptops (Win7 Pro & Win10 Pro 64-bit multiboots), venerable HP Pavilion t760 32-bit desktop (XP & Win7 Pro multiboot), Oracle VirtualBox VM's: XP & Win7 32-bit, XP Mode, aged Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Tab A 2019s (8" & 10.1"), Blu-ray burners, digital cameras, ext. HDDs (latest 5TB!), AnyDVD, Easeus ToDo Backup Home, Waterfox, more. Me: Aussie card-carrying Windows geek.

Might try do some HD maintenance and see if something is amiss there. Might try a chkdsk c: /r from the command prompt. Will flag the drive dirty and run the utility the next time it is started. Check the date/time and make sure it is correct. I’ve seen this cause weird problems. What antivirus are you using and, if changed it since last restore, what did you use previously? And, you 100% sure that there is no Malware/Rougeware running on the computer that would possibly block the Restore from working correctly. If not, would possibly look at and/or use ” rkill from bleeping computers” and install/run Malwarebytes free, to double check for issues. Google search for rkill should take you to the first item it shows and second one liks to what it is and how to use it.

Thank you, Freeloader, for all your suggestions.
I have run chkdsk and defrag; I have run again AV (no, haven’t changed it since last restore), Malware. TriedRestore yet again. No go.
I looked at rkill and it seems beyond my ability to run it correctly.

I had installed the Security Updates at beginning of May when MS raised alarm about vulnerability. I tried to restore to an April date. No go.
I can restore to May 20.
Any clue in all of this?

One unpleasant possibility is that your hard drive has developed some “bad sectors” which are causing corruption of your Restore points. If so, you’ll need a new hard drive soon. Or, as another poster already mentioned, some kind of malware has sneaked into your system and corrupted the Restore files or simply blocked Restore from working. Do you have a full system image backup you can restore?

Jaywoods -Thanks for your time.

Not sure I understand your suggestion: “See if it will complete.” It completes in that the message is it cannot restore to that date.

Are you saying after I get that message I go back to Safe Mode? And when there, what do I select/do?
Thanks.

[QUOTEWhat I am suggesting is if you are not getting the failure in Safe Mode when you run System Restore, but get it after you reboot, try rebooting into Safe Mode instead.
Ah, now I get it. Unfortunately I did get the failure message in Safe Mode….

Mmm, time to restore from a System Image backup …. or do a fresh install!
