Good morning, all…

While recognising that the System Restore facility is not the answer to everything, I do find it very useful. However, it lacks what I regard as an important function: an indication (say, in the task bar) that it has been disabled.

I bet that that I’m far from being alone in that when I disable the System Restore (eg, to do a thorough malware scan) I almost invariably forget to re-start it.

Does anyone know of a way of creating some form of “System Restore is OFF” flag for the desktop or taskbar?

Good morning,

I agree with you that SR “is not the answer to everything” (though some treat it as a cure anything method), but can be useful.

For reasons that I described in post 697,003, it can be good to leave SR enabled during the malware cleaning process (I guess you mean cleaning and not scanning) since if disabled and something goes really bad, you have nothing to help you get back to a running PC – even if it is a running infected PC (not mentioning image backup et al, but then people tend to not use SR).

If leaving SR enabled during the cleaning process, the last step of purging old RP’s is a quick step that can be done in a minute as part of the cleaning, and thus not so easy to forget (turn off & turn on, or create a new RP and tell Windows to delete all but recent one).

Then hopefully this isn’t something that is done often.

That’s a good point about “should something go wrong…”

And isn’t it the most obvious answer that is always the least noticeable? Why didn’t I think of just doing a “Disable-Enable” toggle at the end of an in-depth scan and clean exercise?

I have image backups, but they’re at fixed dates – SR tends to be my quick fix, usually after, e.g., an install/uninstall of something I wanted to try.
