Somehow System Restore has complete disappeared from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. Running a Search for System and Restore shows nothing associated with that program. I’ve also checked Fix a Problem in Help, but clicking on Using System Restore doesn’t bring up that help topic.

A quick Google check shows that McAfee QuickClean has created a problem with the Registry and System Restore in the past, but I’ve never had McAfee on this computer. The affected key, in those cases–HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECLASSES..htc–has the correct value: Content Type=”text/x-component”. The only registry changes I’ve made recently have been as the result of running AdAware and SpyBot, and I can’t conceive that those programs would identify System Restore registry keys as spyware. Running updated NAV and Norton Disk Doctor and WinDoctor identifies no problems. Any ideas? (I’ve also had some DUN problems, but that’s a topic for another forum.)

Problem solved. Somehow (??!) the shortcut in System Tools was deleted. I located the System Restore GUI in the file rstrui.exe in WindowsSystem Restore folder and moved it back into the System Tools folder.
