Just wanted to point out a fairly neat program called System Mechanic. Has a huge amount of significant stuff to clean the registry, hard drive, etc. Too much stuff to list completely…you can download and see the details here . I was quite surprised at the results after running on my W98SE.

      Hi Michael:
I’m always looking for a way to improve my system. However, could you tell me:
      1. What exactly you’ve noticed as an improvement?
      2. Did you use any other utilities to clean your system before? For example, I use Registry Cleaner, RegClean, & Easy Cleaner, as well as booting to DOS & running the command

      scanreg /fix /opt

I’m wondering whether I need another utility, but I’m tempted. grin]
      Thanks.

Don’t know Registry Cleaner or Easy Cleaner, but Reg Clean ROCKS thumbup. Plus it’s free.

        Hi Phil,

Thus far I have only used two of the options, the registry cleaner and the uninstaller cleaner (the one that removes invalid entries from the add/remove programs dialog), but I was amazed at the number of utilities all rolled up into one interface.

I used RegVac a while back, but this found like 1400 or so invalid registry entries. This is rather expensive, $60 I think, but it does have lots of stuff in it. See below a screenshot…

Been Using System Mechanic for some time now. It’s gone through a few upgrades and versions and I can recommend it highly. It’s easy and safe to use. It cleans out tons of junk from the reg and gets rid of unused residual files from everywhere. The only feature that I “go easy” on and proceed carefully with is the duplicate file cleaner. fanfare

        Hi Bob,
How does System Mechanic do on WIN XP? I read some comments that it somehow affected SYSTEM RESTORE??

          Hi Trebor,
The latest version is 37h. It and other prior releases have worked fine on XP. I do not know of any problems with SR, although I no longer use SR, I use GoBack which I feel is a better option. While using SR, there were no problems on my system attributed to Mechanic. Iolo Software also keeps very current on it’s updates and I feel sure that it would have been resolved ASAP.
          Good Utility !! bravo

I would love to use GOBACK but it will not work with dual boot systems apparently. I will take a look at System Mechanic.
