Windows 11 Home 22H2. 2 x 1TB SSDs, one for OS (C drive), the other (D drive) for System Image backup. I’ve been using the Win 7 create System Image function, thinking that old images would be written over if the drive became full, so I was surprised when I recently received the error 0x80780119.
The backup drive D didn’t seem full, but I formatted it anyway, and tried again – in vain. I looked on this forum and found a link to
    https://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-the-backup-failed-0x80780119-error-on-windows-10
It refers to the System Reserved partition, but Macrium and Windows Disk Management display a full “Recovery” partition.

Has anyone successfully tried Step 7 of the above fix suggestions (Create New System Volume)?
If so, what happens when that gets full?
The full Recovery partition on the C drive doesn’t display “System” – does that mean there are no crucial system files? If so, can I simply format it?
Macrium’s “Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows” wants to include the full Recovery partition; that suggests to me that I’ll still be stuck with the full partition that’s causing the problem.

I’d be very grateful for some help to put me back on track for backing up with a System Image.

The recovery partition is a manufacturer provided copy of the Windows installation files. Do not remove it, you may upset the boot records. Also, at <600MB, it’s not worth recovering the space.

My recommendation would be to stop using the Windows 7 backup and use a proper 3rd party app. (See this thread for suggestions.)

p.s. You should copy the backups from D to an external drive just in case your power supply goes pear shaped and kills both internal disks.

Tried Macrium, and was sufficiently impressed that I paid for it and run it. Thank you for the help.
Now, however, Asus UEFI BIOS doesn’t see any other boot possibilities! Old-fashioned BIOS displayed CD-Rom, USB etc… Just Windows Boot Manager on the M2 SSD C drive, so nothing else to click and drag to change the boot order. So I can’t test the Image backup. Anyway, that’s another problem I’m investigating….

Boot up with the macrium usb plugged in and tap the one-time boot options key. Think it’s the esc key for Asus.

Thank you, Paul, for advice and useful link. I’ll post again when I have tried those other options.

      Sorry about spurious HTML.

Have you gone into the BIOS and allowed boot from other devices beside the SSD? You can probably add USB to the boot order there.

Windows will allow you to boot from USB.

With Windows running, plug in the USB.
Hold Shift down while clicking Restart.
Under advanced restart options you should find “use device” and a selection showing the USB.

Thanks for BIOS suggestions. Still working on it. ASUS support advised enabling CSM. That yielded some more BOOT options but not including the cloned image on the second SSD, although that shows up on the drive list

I expect you would need to select the second SSD, not the Windows image on it.

I would check that the second disk has the required files by viewing the partitions. I use MiniTool Partition Wizard for that work. (don’t change anything.)

      cheers, Paul
