I have some fonts which are available in some Windows programs (i.e. Notepad) but I can’t find them in Word. For example “System”, “MS Sans Serif”. I know these are not TrueType fonts but does anyone know if they can be used inside of Word? Thanks.

MS Sans Serif (file name sserife.fon) and MS Serif (file name serife.fon) are used by any Windows application including Word for displaying the text in dialog boxes etc. and are stored in the WindowsFonts Directory. You’re right, they are not TrueType fonts. They are proprietary Microsoft fonts. Their diplay is suppressed in the fonts dropdown boxes within Word. They are screen-optimised and do not print very well. So why would you want to use them within Word?

Thanks. I thought the MS Sans Serif, System, Fixedsys fonts might provide an alternative to the Courier font. I have a printout generated by a Visual Basic for DOS program and it is set up to use the Courier font. I thought there might be another font that looked better but that was not proportional (was a fixed width for each letter like Courier).

Lucida Console, and Lucida Sans Typewriter are a fixed-width fonts. I’m not sure if they came installed or if I picked them up somewhere else.

Thanks! That helps. I’m looking for something that will look okay on a printout so I guess I’ll have to stick with Courier.
