When I “run” scf /scannow I am requested to insert the XP Professional CD. My OS is XP Home, so I do not have an XP Professional CD. When I insert the Home CD, the same screen comes up asking for the Professional CD. Does anyone have any ideas?

AskWoody_MVPMay 27, 2002 at 8:19 pm #590516Is this a OEM copy of the OS?
Is this s Restore CD vs a full OS CD?
I have seen this before, but do not remember what the soluation was. I know that one case it was NOT a legal copy and it had all kinds of problems.

AskWoody LoungerMay 27, 2002 at 8:27 pm #590518This is the CD that came with my Dell computer, and it has a Dell label on it. I can’t answer if it is a full OS CD or a Restore CD. I can tell you that I have had to use it in the past to reinstall XP Home after formatting my hard disk. I just looked at the label on the CD and it says “Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition”

AskWoody LoungerMay 28, 2002 at 10:53 pm #590768Dave:
This is a typical response fromDell’s support group through email.Dear Marvin,
Thank you for contacting Dell eSupport and Services (ESS). We appreciate the opportunity to assist you. I apologize for your trouble and I assure you it is our hope that you have a positive experience with our company.
Marvin, System File Checker is common for both Home Edition and Professional Edition.
To do this, perform the following steps:
Click the Start button and then click Run.
The Run window appears.
In the Open: field, type SFC /Scannow and then click OK.NOTE: You may be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD into the CD or DVD drive.
Please refer to the following link for more information on this utility.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;en-us;Q310747
If the problem persists I would request you to repair and reinstall Windows XP with the help of the following link.
http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=1056993
Thank you for choosing Dell.
Very helpful don’t you think? Their pat response to any problem is to reinstall Windows.

AskWoody PlusJune 2, 2002 at 7:14 pm #591835Gottlieb,
Have you found a solution to your problem yet short of the reinstall?
I know most people don’t like buying their machines from small local dealers but I do it that way and insist on the full version of the OS, not an OEM. It costs me a little more but I have the CD when needed.
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerJune 2, 2002 at 7:23 pm #591853No, I’ve about given up. Since nothing else is wrong, I’m not about to reinstall anything. Here is what Dell says:
Dear Marvin,
Thank you for your time and cooperation.
I apologize for the persistent trouble that you are facing.
Marvin you need not run the SFC if there is any error you can refer to the following article for troubleshooting.
The following link will give you an in depth knowledge about this issue. So please refer to the following link.
http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=1062461
Thank you again for choosing Dell.
Hello,
After recreating this issue in the lab, I have discovered the following. If the Cust. is running WinXP Professional and runs the sfc /scannow, it will prompt for the XP Pro cd. Putting in the Pro CD will finish the scan and work normally. If the Home CD is put in it will request the Pro CD and say that the wrong cd is inserted.
If the cust. is running WinXP Home and runs the sfc /scannow, it will prompt for the XP Pro CD. Putting in the Pro CD will not work and it will again request the Pro CD. Putting in the Home CD will all it to finish the scan and work normally.
So from that information either the cust. is inserting the wrong CD or the cust. has XP Professional installed on the system. The prompt that it gives is ALWAYS “Insert you Windows XP Professional CD ROM now” for both XP Pro and XP Home. The cust. should not pay attention to the prompt and just put in the CD ROM that matches the OS that is installed on his system and it will continue normally. If he doesn’t put in the matching XP cd then it will not work
Hope this helps,
Greg Chastain
