What is the best solution people have found for syncing desktop and laptop computers? I’ve never much liked laptops but with my daughter leaving for college with her shiny new machine, I find we have an extra one (her old one) around the house and even I have to admit it will be useful. Both machines are running Windows 7, Pro on my desktop, Home Premium on the laptop. I would like to have selected data folders synced when both machines are on and connected to our wireless network. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

      Erik,

I use Microsoft’s SyncToy 2.1 to accomplish this. HTH

My preference is FreeFileSync — I don’t recall now exactly why I didn’t like SyncToy, though I do recall having trouble getting a complete sync with it — files were left out. In any case, I then tried FreeFileSync at http://freefilesync.sourceforge.net/, and I haven’t looked back. I think it’s just a matter of using software that “thinks” the way you do. 🙂

I use a paid solution, that will sync the computers as long as they are connected to the internet – Cubby.

You could also just share the folders on the Desktop with the Laptop via networking.

        Jerry,

Won’t help much when you take the laptop on a walk about. 😆

That’s true. In my case, when i leave the house or go on vacation, I leave computer work behind.

Even in that case, Teamviewer is another option.

I have long used Karen’s Replicator v3.6.8 Although it is long in the tooth and no longer updated, I have found it does all I need in this regard, including with Win7 64bit.
