I am having trouble with MOBSYNC.EXE on NT4 SP6a, which keeps on appearing in my %WinDir% SCHEDLOG.TXT file. MOBSYNC is apparently Internet Explorer’s automatic synchronisation task. Here’s the full message:

    “{D34F18B0-576E-11D0-B28C-00C04FD7CD22}_domain_userid.job” (mobsync.exe) 06/08/01 05:45:06
** ERROR ** The attempt to log on to the account associated with the task failed, therefore, the task did not run.
The specific error is:0x8007052e: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
Verify that the task’s Run-as name and password are valid and try again.

Does anyone know where the user name under which this task runs gets set up? I cannot find anything relevant in the usual Tools/Internet Options, and the synchronisation task doesn’t appear in my Task Scheduler’s list of jobs… Needless to say, the task works fine if run manually from IE/Tools/Synchronize…

This is on W2K but there may be some similarities:

      Start | Programs | Accessories | Synchronize

Select the ‘Item to be synchronized’ then click ‘Properties’ then ‘Download’ tab

Do you have a button marked ‘Login’ ?

Leif – I never had previously seen that method of finding the Synchronize screen!

But sadly on NT 4 the screen doesn’t have that Login button.

And on W2K the Login seems to be “If the site requires a user name and password” – presumably the site from where you are obtaining the web pages, not the computer you’re currently running Synchronise on?

        Am I missing something?

Probably not! I’m just grasping at straws and trying to think of the less obvious hiding places for log-ins. (Plus I only 50% trust the true meaning of errors reported – a search for your specific error only threw up sql server errors confused.)
How about Tools | Internet Options | Security – there are some options buried deep in there.

Leif – sorry, nothing there either.

I have this feeling that there must be somewhere obvious that the userid and password are set up, but I can’t find anything anywhere.

            Thanks for your efforts!

I don’t use it – but Could it be within IE and not InterNet options?

              open Internet Explorer
              Tools / Synchronize..

Here is where you appear to set the logon option(s).

Terry, that gives the same Synchronisation screen that Leif’s path produces. I’m still no further forward with finding an actual menu where the userid and password relevant to the execution of the synchronisation task MOBSYNC.EXE is entered!

It’s not just a matter of editing the Startup properties of MOBSYNC from the Control Panel | Services window?
(I assume it will be there – I don’t have it running myself)

(Edited to make link live – Leif)

              Just found this MSKB article-
              http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar…s/Q222/6/28.ASP

              Hopefully that’s it!

Leif – sorry, I cannot find any service which looks as if it would have been associated with Internet Explorer or MOBSYNC

Terry – thanks for finding that article – but I’m very sceptical that it’s relevant. The only account which had the User Right “Log on as a Batch Job” set was the BackupExec account! I have added myself to the list, and will see if it works when the synchronise is next due to start, first thing Monday morning!

I’m reporting back that even after the change described above, my synchronisation task didn’t run this morning, giving the same error message in SCHEDLOG.TXT as always.

              I’m completely stumped now!
