On my main machine I am running Win 10 Pro and use the built-in settings under Windows Update’s advanced options to control feature releases. This has worked well for me in the past. From 1809 to 1903 I used 90 days, and I bumped this up to 125 days for 1903 to 1909. I was therefore surprised to find that 1909 installed just after 90 days. Many will think that this is some kind of “user error”, but I am a very careful individual (!) and double checked the 125 day setting at least once post choosing it. When I checked it immediately after the 1909 installation warning it had indeed reverted to 90 days. This, I suspect, is a mystery that will never be solved. C’est la vie.
Anyway, the main point of this note is to warn people that the behaviour of Windows Update when it hit the 90 day timer noted above is not what I would have expected. I assumed that 1909 would show up as an optional install given I was on 1903 which still has plenty of life left, but instead the forced install process kicked-off and my only option was to delay it by a few days. Is that expected?
It is somewhat ironic that my a Win 10 Home machine that I maintain (and let Microsoft update at will) still has 1909 listed as an optional update, whereas my main Win 10 Pro machine where I try to control updates went through a forced update!
The 1909 install went seamlessly and quickly and I have not noted any issues yet. Windows Search seems ok, but it is not something I use often.
