• Surface Driver won’t Download

Background. I’m using the gpedit with wushowhide update methodology. Have automatic updates set to option 2.

On February 19, wushowhide reported 4 drivers (2 Intel and 2 Surface) and the daily Defender SIU as available to hide. Since I wanted these 5 items downloaded, I did not hide any of them. Later, I think it was the same day, but may have been the next, the SIU and 3 of the 4 drivers appeared in the update queue. I downloaded and installed them with no problem. The missing driver, Surface – Extension – 2.9.139.0, has remained in wushowhide as available to hide for the past 6 days and has never moved to the queue. Why? How can I get it downloaded and installed? During this time, several other updates have appeared in wushowhide and have moved normally to the queue when left unhidden.

    Thanks,

    D. Eager

Dump wushowhide. wushowhide is not reliable. Use WUmgr or WUmt.

Repeating your assertion does not make it true. What evidence to you have that wushowhide is not reliable?

        cheers, Paul

Don, maybe Windows has decided it’s not required so it doesn’t show in the queue. Have you check the MS site for the patch?
Have you tried downloading the driver manually?

      cheers, Paul

Have you tried to download drivers manually from the website?

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/download-drivers-and-firmware-for-surface-09bb2e09-2a4b-cb69-0951-078a7739e120

But if everything works properly, why would you install that in the first place? What is the problem? Maybe the driver is just not available anymore via Windows Update, maybe it was given away for some reason?
There is too much going on on windows update, that is just not possible to keep in touch with single items I think.

My own experience with Hidden / not hidden updates with wushowhide at the same time.
I am not the only one.

With WUngr there was no problem. Hidden remained Hidden.

You appear to be the only one so at present it’s anecdotal. With that in mind, suggest WuMgr as an alternative without bad mouthing wushowhide.

The saga continues. Followed the driver update link provided by doriel above. Did not know about this previously. Thanks! Followed the link there for Surface Pro 7 and was presented with two alternative downloads, one appeared to apply to Win 10 build 17763 and the other to 18363. My current build is 19041 so I selected the 18363, which seems closer. This got me a driver download package 20.122.27379.0 which included the driver I’m missing. Installed the package. Afterwards, missing driver did not appear in the Windows Update History driver list, however, it was no longer listed in the wushowhide list of updates to be hidden. So, I guess I got it???

Driver update list also shows three drivers as installed today that were NOT in the driver package list. Yet another mystery in the Windows Update world!

You did manual update, so I think that is the reason why its not in update history. And now its not in wushowhide because your drivers are up to date.

Unfortunatelly I have no surface device to try it on my own, but.. If it works, I would leave it that way.
