I use styles a lot in word – really love them, mainly the ability to change one of the styles and have it auto update all occurances of that style in the document. I’ve started to use styles in excel and have found that it doesn’t work like it does in word.

I’ve set up a whole bunch of cells with a BORDER style and now I want to change the color of these cell. I changed the color of the border style but it didn’t update all the BORDER cells – am I missing something?

Are you sure you have them all defined with that style?

If you set the cell to a style and then explicitly change some of the formatting, it will not be “updated” when the style is changed. The other formatting will, but the ones that were manually changed after the style will remain.

You were right – it seems that some other style related items on those cells were changes somewhere and they ‘lost’ their style link. I’ve reconnected that now and changing the styles does flow through to those cells.

        Thanks for the replies.

As Steve indicates, modifying a style will not remove manual formatting. You can select a bunch of cells and select the style. Excel will ask if you want to update the style or apply it. Select the latter.

      Hi Ruff-Hi,
Are you aware that you can have up to 6 styles applied to any given cell? – one each for Number, Font, Alignment, Border, Pattern and Protection.

For example, in a budget spreadsheet I have I define several currency styles which use different decimal places, paid/estimates styles that use different fonts and urgent/non-urgent styles that use different background patterns.

      Regards,

I knew there were 6 different ‘things’ that styles could control but I didn’t know I could load up with 6 styles (assuming that those styles only cover 1 unique ‘thing’) – good point.
