I am trying to set up standard styles to control the way our 35 staff send stuff out to customers. I have been through and reset all the styles I want controlled but the name in the formatting toolbar doesn’t change when I select a new style. ie Heading 1. The style changes but the name doesn’t. While this is fine for an experienced editor, for our newbies, as a lot of them are ( WordPerfect converts!) it could be a bit disconcerting.

    Can anyone help with this?

I’m tempted to say “that’s impossible,” but I have noticed that when a character style is applied to the text containing the insertion point, changing the paragraph style will not change the drop-down on the formatting toolbar; it will still show the character style. Is that what you’re seeing, or is it is showing the wrong paragraph style?

You might want to make sure that all your Win2K and Word2K patches are up to date to insure a bug is not the problem.

This happens if you have a character style applied (in addition to the paragraph style). When you change the paragraph style but the cursor is in an area to which a character style is applied, the name of the character style is shown. Generally there is no reason for a character style to be applied to whole paragraphs.

Try Shift-F1 and click on the paragraphs involved to see where your formatting originates.

        Thanks Charles

I tried to send you a copy of my Normal.dot but the system rejected it. Then tried a personal contact and could not figure hiw to attach a file in that screen.

Could you contact me personally to allow me to send my Normal.dot for you to review?

        Cheers

          Hi Phil:
I examined your normal template. Both Jefferson & Charles have hit the nail on the head. When you open your normal template, the style listed is “Page Number”, which is a character style.

What must have happened is that was the last style that you defined in normal.dot; then you saved the template, while the cursor was in the Page Number style. From then on, a new document started with the Page Number style.
          1. Open your normal template (don’t open a document based on it).
          2. Press Ctrl+Spacebar. This will remove the direct character format from the normal style.
          3. Close Word, saving normal.dot

          Cheers,
