Style name bedlam (2003/SP1)

I’m a recent convert to 2003 from Word 2000. I don’t care at all for 2003’s insistence on creating a newly named style every time I apply manual formatting to an existing style. The resulting list of style names is unmanageable and annoying. Is there any way to prevent Word 2003 from doing this, and have it behave like Word 2000? If not, do I at least have the option to not list all of the styles it creates?

Select Tools | Options…
Activate the Edit tab.
Clear the “Keep track of formatting” check box.

“Keep track of formatting” can be very useful, though.

You can see how often some manual formatting or some style has been used, and select all instances of some formatting or style, by right-clicking on the entry in the task pane.

If you use styles, only very little formatting entries should appear. And you have 3 additional buttons to further limit the formatting that is shown if you select “Custom” at the bottom of the task pane (Show/Hide font formatting, paragraph formatting, and bullets/numbering).

If you deselect all three, no manual formatting is shown on the task pane (same as when you deselect “Keep track of formatting”), but you still can quickly check how often some style has been used, and select all instances.
