Recently upgraded from Win 7 32-bit to Win 7 64-bit. I missed a few files in the upgrade and searched windows.old folder to find them. Search finds multiple instances with the same impossible file path (see attached). I can pull the files out from the search window using copy/paste, no problem. When I copied windows.old to another drive, I got 1 GB less data and ~ 17,000 fewer files. But the search problem goes away. The problem is the “users” directory, probably an access problem. I’ve taken ownership of windows.old and changed my file viewing settings to see system files, but that hasn’t completely fixed the problem. So I’m wondering if I can get a good copy before I delete windows.old from the C: drive.

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 22, 2014 at 3:58 am #1440507This shows the merit of using a Command Prompt window with Robocopy, which gives you a log by individual file (if you want that detail) with an invividual error message (if there is a problem with the copy) and a summary at the end to inform you how well your copying went overall!

AskWoody LoungerJune 2, 2014 at 10:47 am #1455128I’m having some issues with deleting the Windows.old folder. I have administrator priviledge, however I still get a permission denied error. How can I fix this?
Edit: I managed to fix it by using the disk clean up utility.

See if How to remove the Windows.old folder helps.
