• Strange sound on shutdown

I am running Windows 98SE and recently a strange sound has been occurring on shutdown. As soon as the monitor goes black, the PC emits beep-beep-beep-beep, pause, beep-beep-beep-beep, just the two phrases. This is a sound and tone I have never heard from the PC before. It is more like that of a small battery-operated alarm clock. This morning, for the first time, the same sound occurred when I switched the PC on for the day. Otherwise my computer seems to be behaving normally. Any clues as to what this might mean?

What is the make and model of the computer? What you’re describing sounds very much like the system mainboard/BIOS giving you an alarm, but the beep codes vary by manufacturer and BIOS revision.

Have you had any other symptoms that would give a clue as to what is going on?

The PC was manufactured by TLSystems in New Zealand in February 1998. It has an ASUS LX PentiumII motherboard. There are no other symptoms. As I said in my earlier posting, “Otherwise my computer seems to be behaving normally.”

I would then start researching here.

What’s the model number & revision on the board? Asus made lots of different LX boards.

All I can find printed printed on the motherboard is P2L97 and Rev. 1.05.

I had this problem on an old P3 machine, it began when i altered the graphics card aperture, perhaps it is a DRAM error? it has never really effected the performance though so i just forget about it
