I had a strange occurrence yesterday in a CMD window.  I must have hit some (as yet unknown to me) combination of keystrokes, and I got a purple insert in the cmd window.  This inset contained some of the the commands I had entered.    I was able, via some CNTL-_ keystrokes to change the color form purple to green.  In this state the CMD window is unusable.  Does anyone know how I got into this state and how I get out of this state?  I have no idea what text to enter into a Google search string.  See the attached screenshot.  Thanks.

Might be worth checking this page on Microsoft Community re. ‘Command Prompt Colours’:

That MS web page has details on how to change the color scheme on a CMD window.  I am so used to black background and white text that I see no need to change.  My question is this – what sequence of keystrokes produced the inset window that listed my last commands?

The posted image indicates that you hit the F7 key while the command prompt window had the keyboard focus. You are seeing the command history. You can dismiss it by hitting the ESC key.

Thanks.  F7 and Esc are the culprit and correction.

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.
