Storing Favorites online?

I have a friend who is looking for a way to store his Favorites online so that they are always accessible to him when he is on the road, e.g., using an Internet Café or a borrowed PC. He said he has already looked at “Google Bookmarks” and rejected it out of hand because it requires that Google Toolbar be installed and that’s unacceptable (smart guy) .

A popular one is Xmarks.
It is a free add-on for Firefox, IE and Safari, allowing you to store and access the favorites online. It can also be used synchronize, backup, restore and share bookmarks across the three browsers.

I tend to be slightly simplistic. I use FireFox as my main browser and keep a Flash drive with me at all times. So, I usually use the following two methods ….

Method One
1)Click Bookmarks -> Organize Books (Ctrl+Shift+”B”)
2)Click Import and Backup
3)Click Export HTML …
4)On popup, I chose my Flash drive and pick a file name changing days date IMNetUser20090705.html
5)To access the bookmarks, open the html file in any browser and click link you want.

NOTE:This is a text based viewing. I also keep a folder called “Remote” on the Bookmarks toolbar so any bookmark added from another location goes in there. I then sort it out on the main computer when I get back to it so the bookmarks are kept sync’d.

Method Two: Using an online Free E-Mail (My case Yahoo.Com)
1)Same as first but open the bookmarks in the browser.
2)Copy the entire text contents of the file and store as a note in the Online Yahoo e-mail. I can open the file on ANY computer with internet access via any browser.

I use Xmarks also. It will synch to any of my computers (bookmarks and passwords if you choose) if I have the add-in in place or I can just go to their website and access them.

If your friend is using internet cafe’s I hope he is looking deeper than just the convenience of bookmarks. Make sure his computer is locked down (file sharing turned off, firewall, virus scanner) and that he’s doing everything on the web via a VPN and https when appropriate.
