I find this most annoying and frustrating.

When I’m seraching old CD’s for a picture or some data stored on a USB key even and I remove tehkey or eject the CD Win7 decides it’ll be ultra helpful and close the explorer window atthe same time. I’ve tried a google search and all I can find is one thread where somebody else finds it as annoying as I and a responder who tells h im he doesn’t find it annoying – great help 🙂

Anyway, I would like to stop this behaviour – can anyone help and I’d prefer a permanent fix rather than a “just click on another drive before eject” answer as I never do …!

    TIA.

Before you eject the device, try moving the mouse to a fixed drive, like C: and pointing to it. Then if it is a CD, right click on the CD drive and press the eject selection.

Michael – I appreciate your time to reply but I did add that this was the one answer I didn’t want as I never remember to do that 🙂

You may not want to remember the step. However; that is the way Windows 7 works. If an active device disappears explorer shuts down.

Best you can do is use a faster way to get Explorer to open after you insert a CD. Win+E will open explorer, but even better would be to make a shortcut to the CD drive on your desktop, and then in the shortcut properties put a shortcut key, like Ctrl+Alt+E to open your E drive. Now you can insert a CD/DVD, press Ctrl+Alt+E and Explorer will open to the drive.

Keeping the left pane open will prevent explorer from closing when a CD is removed. Displaying only the main CD/DVD drive contents window will not.

Add this ” /e,” to the main window of explorer’s properties box (shortcut pane), in front of “%windir%explorer.exe” will open explorer in full disk view.
      Like this: %windir%explorer.exe /e,
Acknowledge the space between the .exe and the forward slash.

That doesn’t change the basic behavior. One must actively click inside the left pane before ejecting the CD, or Explorer will close. Or to state it another way, if the contents of the CD are visible in the right pane when the CD is ejected, Explorer will close, with or without the “/e”.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

If your task is to copy a file or picture from a CD to another folder, you can open Explorer, then put a CD in the drive, which opens AutoPlay. If you click on “Open…” in the AutoPlay popup, a separate Explorer window opens with only the contents of the CD. If you find your picture or file, you can drag it to the target folder in the other Explorer window that you opened first.

If your file isn’t there, eject the CD and insert another. AutoPlay will launch again, etc. While this may seem like a waste of time, the contents of the CD won’t be displayed until they have been read, and that is happening while AutoPlay is preparing to launch. The process of ejecting and inserting CD’s is the same regardless of Explorer’s behavior, so there is very little difference in the actual amount of time involved in the effort, but you can keep an active Explorer window open.

There are switches that can be used that will open the CD tray and ask for a CD when you click an Explorer shortcut, but the Explorer window will still close when you eject the CD.

There may be a registry hack, but I haven’t found one as yet.

      I actually like this feature.

      Instead of stopping this behavior, it looks like your gonna have to change yours;
Open an instance of explorer before hand and also alow the CD/DVD open it’s own instance. Use the CD/DVD’s instance and eject the disk when you are done.
The first instance of explorer will remain open. Use the “%windir%explorer.exe /e,” properties and pin explorer to the taskbar for easy access.
