      At Settings, Accounts, Sign-in options turn off Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in

        This does not work: I already did that .

          Do you see a window or a process?

          • #2458953

            Nothing

              When Edge “opens” at log on, do you see its window or notice its process?

            • #2458971

              If you bring up Task Manager, there are seven or eight Edge processes.

              This works for Windows 11.
              JohnW explains how to turn off Edge at startup:

              Look in Edge settings.

              Under “Edge Bar”, I turned off “Automatically open Edge Bar when computer starts”.

              Under “System and Performance”, I turned off “Startup Boost”, and “Continue running background extensions and apps when MS Edge is closed”.

      I’m on Windows 10, but I believe I had the same issue.

      Look in Edge settings.

      Under “Edge Bar”, I turned off “Automatically open Edge Bar when computer starts”.

      Under “System and Performance”, I turned off “Startup Boost”, and “Continue running background extensions and apps when MS Edge is closed”.

      “To improve Microsoft Edge startup speed, we have developed a feature called startup boost. Startup boost keeps the browser running in the background with minimal processes, so Microsoft Edge will start more quickly when launched.”

      I only use Edge occasionally on demand, so I don’t want it always running in the background.

        Edge bar off already.

        Turned everything else off.

        Rebooted, I think this worked!

        Thank you!

      I’ve no idea about Windows 11 (tried it, hated it, never used since) but what works for me in Windows 10 is to stop Microsoft Edge‘s default pre-load behaviour so it doesn’t do its ‘hidden start’ at all.

      (It’s all to give the impression that Microsoft Edge loads quickly. This is all deceptive nonsense of course if its loaded in the background and hidden at each and every start-up.)

      I used the following REG file to kill all 3 of its default behaviours.

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
      ; Microsoft Edge - automatic actions - DISABLE

      ; Launch Edge at power-on - DISABLE
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\Main]
      "AllowPrelaunch"=dword:00000000

      ; Pre-load Start and New tabs - OFF
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\TabPreloader]
      "AllowTabPreloading"=dword:00000000

      ; Page prediction - OFF
      [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge\FlipAhead]
      "FPEnabled"=dword:00000000

      (Note that Microsoft says that a blank line is required at the end of any REG file. I wish I could find the quote… but it was years ago and I paid little attention at the time.)

      You need to restart after merging the REG file above so the registry is re-read from scratch.

      I haven’t ever seen Microsoft Edge since and no Microsoft Edge processes in the background showing in Task Manager… so I guess it works. 🙂

        There’s no deception. Microsoft explains exactly what Starup Boost does:

        Startup boost keeps the browser running in the background with minimal processes, so Microsoft Edge will start more quickly when launched.

        Also explained right at the top of Edge, Settings, System and performance where the simple on/off switch for Startup Boost lives.

        All three of those were for Edge Legacy (2015-2020), not the current Edge (Chromium).

      I don’t use Startp Boost and I have a 4.5 year old computer running Windows 10. Edge starts instantly anytime I want to use it (Firefox is the default browser). I always buy a really good computer from Dell usually every four years but this time I thought I’d would wait longer.

      Spoke too soon: Edge starting up anyway. Now what? If I have to do registry entries, can you give me just a link and it’s done? I am afraid to edit registry.

        If Microsoft Edge is listed on the Startup tab of Task Manager, you could right-click and disable it there.

      One of the first things I did when I got the pc!

      Let’s try this from the top:

      • Open Edge
      • In the URL space, type: edge://settings/system
      • Make sure all the System settings are off

              Sometimes toggling on and off “resets” a toggle switch that got whacked by a computer operation. I’m out of ideas.
