I have a whole bunch of numbers (about 5000) and I am fairly sure that they are from a statistical distrubtion of some sort. Are their any pieces of software that will take these 5000 numbers and give me a statistical distribution that fits well?

      Hi Tim,

CrystalBall, I believe, can do that. The thing is, it’s not free. It’ll give you a variety of distributions ordered by goodness of fit, then you can choose which ones you keep. Actually CB is not a standalone application, but an Excel plugin.

      Hi Tim,
You can check http://www.freestatistics.altervista.org/stat.php%5B/url%5D Free Statistics – Free Statistical Software. Some of them are Excel AddIns. Some of them come with lot(s) of background information. IMHO http://www.statpages.org/miller/openstat/%5B/url%5D is a good general one.
Sorry I don’t know how to put links directly into this document.

Thanks all – I ended up downloading palisade’s bestfit program. It quickly told me that my data wasn’t lognormally distributed (tail too heavy).
