I keep my HD as clean as possible. I use CCleaner, registry cleaners, and Auslogics disk defragger regularly. I remove all unnecessary startup items. But the system wasn’t as fast in starting up or shutting down as I wanted it to be.

I ran Recuva, a file recovery utility, and it listed over 4,800 deleted files, most of which were not recoverable. So I then ran CCleaner with the “Wipe Free Space” option enabled, and then ran Eraser, which also wipes cluster tips in addition to free space. Recuva now showed only about a tenth as many files.

Now startup and shutdown take about half as long.

Does anyone know how startup and shutdown times could possibly be affected by wiping free space?

Maybe this will work some magic for you even if we don’t know why.

I would think that merely wiping freespace would have absolutely no noticable affect whatsoever on operating system startup and shut down times.

To speed up boot times from cold start try this:

Select no GUI option and change Timeout to a more reasonable time. As can be seen I use 3 sec instead of the default 30 sec.

Note: the timeout setting controls how long the selection menu for the OS to boot is displayed. If you have one OS it has no effect.

Be aware, that if you choose to use “no gui boot” you will not get any messages displayed if you run chkdsk. When you use “no gui boot” the system does not display any bitmapped graphics during the boot process.

Your slow down was likely caused by a botched registry cleaning that caused the OS to hunt for things that no longer existed. I doubt ccleaner was the culprit because it is pretty conservative about what it deletes. I use JV16 power tools and love it, but some of my customers have been duped into buying other products and have paid dearly with crashes, viruses, and scareware. I think you got lucky and windows restored a previous copy of the registry. Go to the command prompt and type SFC /SCANNOW then enter. Also do CHKDSK C: /F when that is done. Comodo System Cleaner also does a good job and offers to back up files before deletion and makes it easier to restore backups if something goes wrong. It is free, but takes some studying in the help files to understand everything. Every couple weeks, I delete the old backup files, provided everything is running normally.
