I recently made changes by including some add-ins (which I have done before with no problem). However, after loading them this time whenever I start up Excel, after all the add-ins have been loaded, I get a message stating:

“This workbook is currently referenced by another workbook and cannot be closed!”

No error number, and once I click OK, then Excel works fine.

Any suggestions on what causes this and what can be done to eliminate?

Have you checked whether it might be one of the add-ins? Try unloading them one by one and reopening Excel – until the error message stops. For some reason, one of them may have become corrupted. HTH

Yes, I had taken all add-ins out and the problem persisted.

After following Jan’s post carefully, and still no results, I checked one final place (My Documents…ExcelXLStart as opposed to Program FilesOffice) and there was an extra file there with the name XLStart.xla. I removed it from the folder and no more problem.

Thank you both for offering the advice and the process of detecting the problem. Much appreciated!
