A friend has the following listing in his START UP listing. In the left hand column, it reads “description of short cut”. In the right hand column, there is the following C:windowsapplication datamicrosoftinstaller{5264e937-b0156-11d2-8c0e-00c04bffcff9a12970b7.exe

Any idea what this is??? I took the check mark out but when the computer was restarted, the check mark was back in the box.

Trojan? Or maybe just a virus.

The fact that it is so difficult to identify is itself is suspicious – but it may just be some innocent patch from MS shrug.

When you deselected it, did you select ‘Normal’ startup? – if so you will have reset your de-selection.

No – selective startup was the choice. It re-enabled itself even under the selective startup choice.

I find the fact that it keeps re-enabling itself highly suspicious as well. I have no CSLID or GUID of that number on my system. I cannot find that number on a Google search. It may just be a random combination of numbers — which is also suspicious. It just sounds bad all the way around — but I am paranoid. ;-]

He may want to search his registry for those numbers and see what comes up. I would also search the hard disk for an executable file with that name.
