I understand that the number of programs that start up on logging on can affedt the speed of the system.
    I see a list when I enetr Run:Msconfig.
But I also see link somewhere to Start Menu. Does it lsit programs that are turned on, or is does it just provide
    links to turn them on?

      Steven,

The “Start Up” menu just provides links to SOME programs that start when your machine is turned on. If you want to see all the programs and processes that are automatically started download the free autoruns program from Microsoft.

      Hi asteven1,

The Start menu contains links to run programs, and can contain a brief listing of recently opened Programs and files. There is a Startup folder in the Start menu. Click Start orb > All Programs > Startup to see any programs that run when Windows starts. To prevent any programs listed there from auto starting, just remove them from the folder. The key is to know what programs do not need to be auto starting. Most do not, but some do. I have Dropbox installed on my computer, and it placed an entry in the Start menu Startup folder. I want Dropbox to run automatically, so I leave it in the Startup folder.

MSConfig can be used to prevent specific software from auto starting at Windows boot. Better yet, when you identify software that unnecessarily runs at Windows boot, try to find a setting within the program that will turn off the ability to auto start at boot.

Some Services autostart programs at bootup. You can check Services by going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. It is best to look in Services after you identify the programs that are autostarting.

MS Sysinternals Autoruns is a great tool for analyzing your start up programs, especially the ones listed in the Logon tab.

if you have ccleaner installed on tools-startup- you can disabled items you may dont want to run automatically on startup. 🙂
