I’m on 20h2 and just noticed this morning that i can’t open the start menu. I searched the site but didn’t find anything.

Anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

I can’t get to the cmd prompt to run any diagnostics such as scannow/sfc

    Thanks

Have you tried restarting (not shutdown/turn on) the computer and logging in again?
Have you tried the “Windows key”?
Can you type cmd.exe in the search box and start the Command Prompt that way?

I did try restarting but had no effect. the windows key does not bring up the start menu…nothing happens. I was able to get to the cmd prompt and run dism. the results said image was restored. Tried again but still not working.

Ran sfc and it showed no issues

rhp52, there’s a quick and easy way to check, this is where DISM GUI comes in handy to check things over without typing in commands all the time. Yeah, I’m a lazy typer but this works great.

Update: in Task mgr. under processes I see that Search is suspended. Could this be the cause of the start menu not working?

If it’s not in Processes or Details in Task Manager:
Follow the link in @b ‘s post.
        Look at Option 3
        Open an elevated Command prompt.
Copy/paste the two commands into the Command Prompt, one at a time and hit Enter after each one.

I ran both and no start menu. I also ran the start menu trouble shooter and it shows Cortana

      not installed correctly.

Does it work when you press and hold the shift key whilst clicking the start button?
IMHO use Open-Shell instead, it’s far more customisable and gets rid of the ‘Fisher Price’ look.

Update: it seems the start menu may be back, but it appears to be full screen. Rebooted with the same result. The app squares are seemingly unmovable?? Any suggestion would help..

Anyway I did want to thank those who responded…we’re making progress…

There is a setting in the Settings App for the Taskbar to be full screen.
Turn it OFF if it’s ON.
Right click on the taskbar, click on the Taskbar settings gear.

If start menu stops working, you should press CTRL+AL+DEL and select “Sign out”.
Then sign in again and Start menu starts working again. This solution worked for me numerous times.

If something is causing push notification services to not start automatic, that causes the start mento to not work aswell, in that case just check so they are set to auto in services

so i tried re- indexing and after reboot the start menu was there! Then, after arranging the tiles and such I went to check that all my files and folders were there and… it disappeared. I can sometimes intermittently get it to appear and when it does it is incomplete, other instances get the blue circle.

Again, I appreciate the suggestions from everyone.
