I have messed around with my Start menu, in one of the users and in the All Users area. What default links (shortcuts) are supposed to be in the following folders?
    C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart Menu
    C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup
    C:Documents and SettingsEDWARDStart Menu
    C:Documents and SettingsEDWARDStart MenuProgramsStartup

I understand that installed programs affect both areas, what I wish to know is what links are installed in a clean installation?

I foolishly placed the same links in both locations and finished up with duplicate applications trying to start, double icons in the System Tray and generally trouble.

    All help appreciated.

Depends on what you mean by a clean install. Do you mean just the OS? Or do you mean the OS plus applications? Many times applications will ask whether you want to install for the current user or all users. If you installed to ‘all users’ that is where the shortcuts should go. Generally, you can just put the shortcuts where you think they should be, remove duplicates, and see what happens.

I mean immediately after the installation of the operating system. In my case XP Home. I really want to recreate the status quo.

I understand that some programs are started from the registry, the ones I want to know are those in the folder All Users as stated in the original post.

Immediately after installing the OS there is nothing in any Startup folder. I can’t help on what is in Start Menu as every system I’m aware of has been changed so much since installing the OS that I can’t remember what the initial configuration was.

Some programs install just for the logged in user, while others prefer to install for everyone. If you find that either startup folder works for you, I guess it doesn’t really matter. However, if you move them all to All Users only and log in as another user, you may find that some are not valid in that location. (Not sure the work to diagnose that is worth your time!)
