Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |
Hi All
My desktop antivirus program (Sophos Home) puts an icon in the taskbar when I open it. It should be the Sophos Shield, but it now shows a small rectangle with pictures of paintbrushes. It also shows this in the list of programs in the start menu. Has anyone got any idea what could have changed it, and how to correct it without doing a reinstall?
Windows 11 and Windows 10 laptops display correctly.

I think the Windows icon cache may have become corrupted. Try saving the following commands into a .bat file and then running it:
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
attrib -h IconCache.db
del IconCache.db
start explorer
Edit: I also attached my own batch file for convenience.
I have now solved the issue. I found a disk image from April and restored that, spent a couple of hours bringing it upto date and all is now well 
It was surprising how much needed to be updated, but it got rid of a lot of dross in the process.
I’m glad you were able to solve the issue and get rid of that dross. Now that everything is up to date, you might want to consider making a new disk image when you get a chance.
Yes. Done that, prior to testing patch Tuesdays foul ups.
The more recent images had the same issue for some reason which I could not discover. I tried clean boots, deleting the icon cache etc., to no avail. Its a mystery – I dont like unfixable mysteries on computers.
