Standard toolbar has gone AWOL (2003)

My standard toolbar disappeared when I was using the scroll wheel I think. I’ve tried resetting all toolbars and moving them around, all to no avail. Any ideas how I can get it back (I presume I can force Outlook into a safe mode or something similar).

Toolbar customizations are stored in a file named OutCmd.dat. Its default location is

C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook

(Note: this is a hidden/system folder. Make sure that you can see these). Try the following:
– Quit Outlook
– Rename OutCmd.dat to OutCmd.old
– Start Outlook.

I can only find one copy of OutCmd.dat and this is dated 12/11/2000 – I can’t see how this can be holding toolbar customisation. However, I did rename it and it didn’t make any difference.

Any other ideas – would going back to safe mode help for instance?

I don’t think safe mode will help here – in my Outlook 2002 (I don’t have 2003), the toolbars are placed in their default locations but this setting is not stored when returning to normal mode.

An OutCmd.dat from 2000 seems unlikely to be for the 2003 version.

You can try this – whether it works depends on your environment.
– Switch to the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
– Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
– Type Explorer.CommandBars(“Standard”).Position = msoBarTop
– Press the Enter key.
– Switch back to Outlook (Alt+F11)

comes up with run time error 424 Object required – am afraid my vb knowledge is nil

I’m sorry, the error is mine. Try ActiveExplorer.CommandBars(“Standard”).Position = msoBarTop instead. That is, use ActiveExplorer instead of Explorer.

This will be a handy thing for me when I am training as toolbars have disappeared before (surely it should not be possible?)

The toolbars don’t really disappear, but by accident get moved offscreen. The (corrected) instruction I posted “docks” the toolbar at the top of the application window again.
