In SSMS 2005 (Visual Studio) what’s with the Object Explorer wanting front and center all the time? Whenever I open a sproc from Object Explorer Details, Object Explorer sticks it’s neck out (it opens). I have the pin set to Auto Hide (sideways pin) so my expectation is that it doesn’t open at all, just stays hidden, but what happens is it opens and doesn’t hide, no matter where the focus is. Is this a fixed bug in a service pack, or newer version? Is it intended to work this way? I miss the reason behind it. Even if I close Object Explorer and modify a sproc from OE, Object Explorer opens again and sticks it’s neck out. Sometimes it’s not possible to hide it again without pinning it, then “unpinning” it again. It’s a nuisance.

question:
Is there a way or setting to keep Object Explorer hidden but available if I call it?

i use the pin, wiht no real problems, it generally only pops up when i need it.

but, from what i know the only real way to get rid of it, until you need it, is to press the cross (which in that context measn “Hide” rather than “close”, as with solution explorer) and then click View > Object explorer when you want it back. and then close when you have finished.

in my opinion that is more of a annoyance, but i guess im not having the same problem you are

I use both 2005 and 2008, and normally keep the Object Explorer open and pinned as I use it to select objects and work with them, so I don’t view it as an aggravation. Are you using it as Dockable? If you do it as Floating then I can see how it could get in your way. BTW, I run on high resolution monitors, so screen real estate isn’t an issue for me.

@ Christoper: By “press the cross”, do you mean click on the “x” (close)? I don’t see a cross that means “Hide”.

@ Wendell: I keep the Object Explorer dockable, not floating, docked on the left hand side and “Auto-Hid” . As a consultant I am restricted to a 17″ screen.

yes i do.

In most microsoft products the X means close (for example the SSMS window!) however inside SSMS the cross doesnt actually close anything it just hides it until you call it again from the menus.
