I have it set in Device MGR to be always on.  I’ve run disk checks and it tests fine. And yet if left unattended it often turns off so that the drive is then not recognized.

It’s plugged into an external hub, and I’ve switched plugs to see if that is the issue, but it seems OK.

When it does shut down, if I turn off the power and then turn it back on, the drive comes right back.

So, if it’s not the hub, and not Device Manager settings, and the drive appears to have no issues when it is running, what might it be?

Is there some type of way/utility that I can set to “touch” the drive every couple of minutes and see if that fixes it?

What is the brand and size of your SSD and the brand of external drive enclosure?

      Desktop Asus TUF X299 Mark 1, CPU: Intel Core i7-7820X Skylake-X 8-Core 3.6 GHz, RAM: 32GB, GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. Display: Four 27" 1080p screens 2 over 2 quad.

        It’s a SanDisk Ultra 3TB drive.  Beyond that, I can’t say.

Plug it in direct and test.

Paul, it connects fine directly.  But originally it does also through the hub.  I’ll let it set and see if it stops.  I may just be one specific plug on the hub, and in fact I believe I have another hub here to try as well.

I’ll, as they say, be back!

Aside from your problem I would replace the drive with something else as soon as possible. I did.

Look again at the internal USB connection settings in Device Manager or the advanced Power section in Settings for the checkbox:

      USB-hub-power

If you find this checked on any USB hub, uncheck it.

      No one makes/sells 3TB SSD’s, they’re all either 2TB or 4TB (SanDisk Ultra SSD’s are all internal drives and only available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB & 4TB sizes.)

The only 3TB drives available, either internal/external, are all HDD’s.

Suggest you use the CrystalDiskInfo portable version to determine the make/model to verify exactly what it is.

When I plug my 256GB Kingston DataTraveler Max (drive G:) into an external hub, it clearly shows the proper model and size.

      ExternalDriveInfo

If CrystalDisk does show it as a 3TB SanDisk Ultra, it’s highly likely it’s a fake drive and I’d suggest getting rid of it for something legit before it causes other problems.

If it’s something else, please post the make/model as some external drives (especially those labeled Eco-friendly) include internal firmware that forces them to power down after a certain period of non-use (I have an external Toshiba drive that does this and it’s extremely annoying!)

If it’s one of those type of drives, there’s nothing you can do with any Windows settings that will keep it powered up all the time.

Sorry about that.  Explorer shows 1.55 TB used of a total 3.63 SSD.

        Probably a 4GB disk then.

The manufacturers “cheat” by describing capacity in GiB not GB.

        cheers, Paul
