• Squeezebox Radio – gone forever?

For years we have been using three Logitech Squeezebox Boom radios connected to the internet (WiFi) via the MySqueezebox.com server.

Over recent weeks the stream appeared to be hosted by TuneIn.

Today it appears as if the MySqueezebox.com server has been shut down and we cannot find a way to connect the radios to the internet.

Does anyone else still use a Logitech Squeezebox and, if so, have they found a way to make an internet connection other than via MySqueezebox.com?

If it helps, we still have Logitech Media Server v7.7.5 and SqueezeCenter 7.3.2 software (2023) as well as manuals and related material.

So i went to the link found here and I downloaded media server 8.5.2, installed and still not able to connect. Am I doing something wrong? I want to run the system locally so I can play my music on my computer through my stereo. Any help would be appreciated.

        • #2686084

We need more than “still not able to connect”. Exactly what are you trying to connect to where and how are you attempting to do it?

I play music from my computer on the stereo in the office by running a cable from the line out to the stereo amp.
What sort of stereo do you have?
          Is it near your computer?
Is your TV connected to it?
Is your TV smart? (You can play music via the TV.)

          cheers, Paul

Sorry for the lack of info, just a bit frustrated. I used to be able to have my computer on and play MP3’s from the computer through the squeezebox and on my Yamaha stereo using my network. Now I can’t get my hand held unit to even connect to my network. The base unit is connected to my network via hardwire and connected to the Yamaha via line out as you have. I just don’t know what to do at this point. Is it still possible to play my mp3’s from my squeezebox?

    • #2651544

Is there any way to connect the Squeezebox unit to a different server(service)? I mean directly from the unit itself?

Did not have time to play with the Squeezebox today but it is unlikely that we will use a computer based media server.  Simply do not feel comfortable using a computer to stream audio to a radio.

When I get a chance, I will see if we can replace MySqueezebox.com with a streaming service such as SiriusXM on the Squeezebox itself.

In the mean time we are also considering an alternative internet radio such as a Grace Digital Mondo Elite Duo.

      • #2661147

Logitech shut it down March 2024.

Buy a Sangean Internet radio… good quality.

How do we know that Sengean won’t stop supporting their product, the way that Logitech has stopped supporting it’s product?

          • #2673454

            Phantom

There is no guarantee that Sengean won’t stop supporting their internet radios.

All we can do when purchasing a unit is to

            • Find a radio produced by a well-recognized major player in the field,
            • Made by a company that has a history of supporting its products, and
            • An organization that has a large number of units using its servers.

do not feel comfortable using a computer to stream audio to a radio

All you are doing is using it to convert the format so the SB works. Any old computer will work – don’t use a production machine.

Yes, feeding the Logitech Squeezebox Boom radio from a computer is an option. And I am assuming that the audio feed will stream via. the computer – not directly from our router.

So there are a number of issues to consider including:

        • The time it will take to install and learn how to use the computer app.
        • The time it will take to setup the radio(s) to run via a computer vs. directly from the internet,
        • Do we need one computer to support all three radios or one computer for each?
        • Do we need to do regular computer maintenance on the dedicated radio support computer(s) including:
          • Monthly Windows updates,
          • Backups (including the cost of an external drive(s),
          • Updating to Windows 11 at the end of 10’s life (our spare computers do not support Windows 11),
          • Virus protection,
          • Etc.
        • Do the computer(s) need to run 24/7 or will they wake up when a radio(s) is turned on?
        • Power consumption – the average power consumption of one of our computers is 235.9 Wh,
          • We shut down our computers when not in use to save power,
          • The average playing time for our radios is 60 minutes/day,
          • If the computer(s) supporting the Squeezebox(s) need to run 24/7 that is power wasted.

From a time value of money plus power costs my instincts tell me that we will save by replacing the radios.

Raspberry Pi can host the server but there is setup time.

It depends how you want to use the radios.

If they are all playing the same thing then you only need wifi speakers and a controller – like the Sonos multi room or Audio Pro Addon.
If you want to be able to use them independently you need internet radios.

As of now, the Gracedigital’s Mondo Elite Duo is the front runner as a Squeezebox Boom replacement

Unfortunately, like Logitech, Gracedigital has a history of ending support for its legacy radios including shutting down their servers.

However, unlike Logitech, Grace offered special onetime discounts to customers effected by the server shutdown during the 2020/2021 server transition.

Unfortunately, like Logitech, Gracedigital has a history of ending support for its legacy radios including shutting down their servers. However, unlike Logitech, Grace offered special onetime discounts to customers effected by the server shutdown during the 2020/2021 server transition.

I’m in that camp. I have three Grace radios that are being used as aux-in speakers. I purchased one Mondo at a discount which I’m still using. I definitely wasn’t too happy about them disabling my paid for devices.

But, one correction. They were outsourcing the server to Reciva, who was bought out by Qualcomm and shut it down.  So, Grace Radio created their own in-house server. Which, truth be told, is easier to use and offers more options. For example, I like to listen to/watch Club Twit and I was able to access that with my Mondo and set up a programmable button. There is IHeart, Chromecast, and other stuff, I don’t think they had before. So, overall, it was a good thing. I’m sure the change cost them dearly with loyalty. OTOH, when I purchased my Mondo during Covid, they were sold out  all the time. But I give them a thumbs up.

      Kathy,

I’m not a pro at this Squeezebox stuff, but can answer a few of your earlier questions yet unanswered.

I’ve been using squeezebox for years (since 2009), with ability to stream via both the squeezebox.com and the computer (mac) installed Logitech media server.  Over time, I have opted to stream via the computer-installed server, since it provided not only access to internet radio stations but also my full iTunes library on my computer.  So, when the squeezebox.com server was terminated recently, I didn’t even notice – except for stations that were previously through Pandora are no longer accessible.  All 5 of my squeezebox booms (and one squeezebox duet) still receive all ‘direct’ (non-Pandora) internet radio, and can access my full iTunes library to boot.

The ‘server’ software is installed on only one computer – and I can access different stations / library on each individual squeezebox player device, or have any number of them synchronized.  I wish Logitech/UE/Squeezebox didn’t make it seem like everything was being discontinued or ‘it’s the death for all my boom devices…’ – If you are using the Logitech media server on a computer, it and internet radio continues to work just fine.  (except for no more Pandora access, and I think other 3rd party services).  All is still well for me – and I did not do a thing, other than continue to connect via the Logitech Media Server installed on just one computer.  The sky did not fall.  Geez, they sure made it seem like it would.

Regarding the need to have a computer running, yes – anytime you want to play music on any of your squeezebox devices, your ONE computer where the server is installed must be running.  But it would be incorrect to say your computer has to be running 24/7.  Just whenever you want to use a squeezebox device.  (I know that’s a slight distinction.  But it is material:  I used to have my computer on a daily startup/shutdown schedule for the few hours a day I am home AND awake, but abandoned that and just keep the computer running now.  It partly sleeps when not used, and this does not interfere with Squeezebox device operation.)  By the way, I haven’t opened or finagled with the Logitech Media Server installed on my one computer in years.  It just operates in the background.  It’s not even indicated to be ‘open’ on my iMac.  But the five Squeezebox Booms and one Squeezebox Duet continue to play internet radio and anything in my iTunes library just fine.  I’ve nearly forgotten about the server software installed on the computer.  Good luck!

Thanks for the very clear explanation. After installing the ‘server’ software, am I correct in thinking one still uses the controls and functions on the SB to select channels? My wife primarily uses the SB. Is there any reason to install the ‘server’ software on her laptop rather than mine? I see there is the iPeng app for $8.99 and also the iPeng ue app which appears to be free. Is one better than the other?

    • #2652677

PS I would recommend to install the iPeng app on iPhone – it’s a great remote control for all of your Squeezebox devices.  Switch between devices, navigate all your favorite radio stations, browse new stations, browse your iTunes library….  All still working now on March 23, 2024.

Logitech Media Server is making me sign in with a squeezebox.com account. It cannot authenticate, so control panel does not give me access. I can get to the web version. I am running LMS v8.4. Is there a way to bypass the squeezebox.com sign-in?

I serve music from my PC to my radio. I am not sure that I can add new tracks to it without getting to LMS Control Panel. (Running it as administrator doesn’t work.)

Thanking you in advance for your help.

      Hi,

I only ever used mine as an internet radio. I cant see any options to do so, is it bricked?

With the server software running on a laptop or desktop, and using the standard interface or a phone with the iPeng app, you can play radio streams on your Squeezebox.  If this seems too inconvenient, then yes it is time for another device.  For a pretty elegant look, one easy device combination (if you usually just fire up a station or a playlist and let it go) is use your old deactivated cell phone connected to wifi to play through a good bluetooth speaker, leave it charging in the speaker’s charge dock or next to it if the speaker doesn’t have one.  And use whatever app you prefer to stream or do internet radio.

          deimos

We already have quality stereo speakers attached to each of our workstations at home.

So for us, the simplest alternative to an internet radio is to stream via the computers using SiriusXM (we already have a subscription for the car) or one of the other free or fee-based internet streaming services.

The primary disadvantage is with an internet clock radio we can set the timer to turn off the sound after a defined period of time.  Not so easy with the computer interface.

        • #2657771

Thanks. Not really what I want to do. So looks like the bin for it!

        • #2660877

Appreciate this thread. Have loved my Logitech Internet radio for years running squeezebox.com.
Looks like unless you run Logitech media server locally the internet radio  is a brick. Not quite following how to listen thru the radio if LMS is installed on the computer. I assume you  configure the network setting to the computer on the same network. Meanwhile, old deactivated cell phone with WiFi access streaming to Bluetooth speaker looks like the easiest solution for me.

If there is an easy solution for continued use of the internet radio as a stand alone device that can connect to another service I would gladly do it. Just need some simple guidance. For now seems like the Logitech device is a brick 🧱. Sad to see it go. Any further advice appreciated.

Definitely not bricked – information at https://lyrion.org which will explain how to set up the small, inexpensivem, low power device you need at home to keep it working.

Failing that almost all the Squeezebox devices sell on via eBay! So does not need to be landfill!!

    • #2661094

A month ago, I started this thread hoping of find a workaround to keep our Squeezebox Boom radios in operation after Logitech ended support by turning off the MySqueezebox.com server.

      So far, no luck.

As a result, over the last four weeks we have been going through a steep internet radio learning curve.

When we bought our Squeezebox radios, we simply plugged them in, connected then to our WiFi, added five or six streaming stations to its memory, and promptly forgot about how they worked.

We used our Squeezeboxes as clock radios.  Turned them on for an hour or so at night, used the alarm as needed, and looked at the clock from time to time.

Then they stopped working and the hunt was on for replacements.

A search of the web for internet radio reviews was frustrating.  Most of the web-based reviews were hosted by sites that I had never heard of.  Based upon the limited amount of quality information that we turned up we settled on a gracedigital Mondo Elite Duo.

After nearly a week struggling to understand the Mondo Elite Duo instructions the internet clock radio became operational.

But we are having significant second thoughts about our choice of the gracedigital product including:

      • Who is gracedigital,
      • How long will/can they support the Mondo Elite Duo streaming service,
      • Why was it so difficult to set the radio up,
      • Etc.

If we were starting over, we would have gone with a better-known manufacturer such as:

      • Sangean,
      • SiriusXM,
      • PHILIPS, or
      • Ocean Digital

It’s Great seeing this thread on options for using our Squeezebox Radios. I have 4 and can’t yet throw in the trash so still looking at all options going forward.

The LMS Server seems to work okay but seems spotty at times. Could be the old computer I’m  using.

Has anyone tried using a home server like Synology for running LMS server? This could be a great option if we can get it to work.

Thanks for everyone’s effort in keeping these nice sounding devices alive.

I have had a Logitech Squeeze radio for many years and used it in the UK. We took it to Finland last year where my wife is from and used it from there. In the UK we bought a Ruark R1S internet radio. Fantastic piece of kit I can recommend as an excellent replacement for Squeezebox. Not especially cheap but really well made and excellent sound and looks.

It would be great if someone came up with a solution to use the Squeezebox as standalone internet radio as before though. Using it through a computer just seems too messy. So hoping someone can fix that or I think it will end up in the skip.

      • #2681043

What is not practicable about installing LMS on a low power device?
As you have 6 units it makes sense to buy a Raspberry Pi to run LMS.

I don’t want to stream my music, I just want to listen to radio stations.  I do not want to leave my PC on all the time or fiddle with it to select a station. Maybe I am misunderstanding what this Lyrion thing is.  As for raspberry pie. What the heck is that ? Words fail me!

          • #2681307

Obviously we all have different aptitudes for messing with computers, but to operate the radio once you have the software installed isn’t quite as fiddly as you fear. I leave it to the other threads to cover installing the software on the computer, but if you were to do so then:

Once the radio and the PC running the LMS software are connected to the same network then the radio is just as independent as you are used to. You use the radio itself in the same way for searching for the radio stations you want, selecting stations and adding them to the memory push buttons. As long as the PC server is on you can forget that anything has changed. A whole host of extra facilities does become available including music streaming, but you leave that to explore in future.

You do need to have the computer running when you want to listen, but there is a body of opinion that it is better to leave a modern computer running than to keep switching it on and off.

            • #2681343

Thank you for your comment.  I found it very helpful and encouraging.  I will play around with downloading the Lyron thingy.

I always thought that to leave a PC on all the time was a bad idea as it could increase vulnerability to bad actors etc.?

            • #2681572

As long as you have it locked with a password it doesn’t matter if “BA” are about.
The downside is the power consumption of running a PC all the time, thus a Raspberry Pi as the always on computer. The Raspberry is also headless (no keyboard or monitor) so “BA” can’t access it.

Raspberry Pi 4B starter kit + a wifi dongle.
You put this in a cupboard and just enjoy your SB again.

Our Squeezebox radios are scattered around the building and are fed by a single WiFi router.

What is the range of a Raspberry PI’s signal and how many units, tuned to different radio feeds, will a unit support at one time?

            • #2681686

The wifi dongle is for the RPi to connect to your router. This puts it on the same network as your radios. Audio streams are low bandwidth so you don’t need a great wifi connection to the RPi.

It appears that there are a number of options for recovering a Squeezebox including but not limited to:

      • Raspberry Pie 4B,
      • Lyrion Music Server (aka. LMS, fka. Logitech Mediaserver, SlimServer, SqueezeCenter, SqueezeboxServer, SliMP3), and
      • The Logitech media server on a computer.

Once I have some time, I will try to install the Logitech media server on a computer. It appears to be the simplest/straight forward approach for someone who does not like to work under a computers hood.

The open question is how much power can be saved by using Raspberry Pi vs a workstation for streaming audio to a Squeezebox.

My workspace is equipped with a workstation, internet modem, router, voice over internet modem, two LED monitors, and telephone. All equipment, except one of the monitors, receives its power via a CyberPower UPS.

With all equipment powered up and the workstation at rest – the POWERPANEL Personal app reports total power consumption of 116 watts.  While streaming a YouTube video on the workstation power consumption jumps to 126 watts.

“The power consumption of the Raspberry Pi 4 varies – when idle it tends to consume around 3 to 4 watts, with an increase of 0.5 watts for each core that is then busy, up to a maximum of 6 watts when all four cores are working.”  https://www.ecoenergygeek.com/raspberry-pi-power-consumption/

In our case, on average, the workstation in question runs from 8:00 am until 11:00 pm each day and shuts down shortly after 11:00 pm.

Based upon the above, the work station consumes approximately 10 watts of power to stream to the Squeezebox while the Squeezebox is on (approximately one hour per day) vs. 6 watts for the Raspberry Pi.  But a Raspberry Pi dedicated to a Squeezebox runs 24 hours a day with a steady power consumption of 3 to 4 watts.

So, at best, the Raspberry Pi provides nominal power saving if any at all vs. streaming via the workstation.

And the power consumption question becomes more problematic if streaming is via a  notebook vs a workstation.

    • #2682067

      RPi at an average of 4W x 24hr = approx 100W
      PC at 80W (allow 30W for the internet gear) x 15hr = approx 1200W

Less than 10% additional to run a dedicated RPi and your radios still work when the PC is not in use.

      cheers, Paul

In my earlier post I was frustrated because I’m not very technical but once I told Lyrion where on my computer the music files were, it did a re-scan and everything digital that I own is now available to me. Equally important, I have now established my Internet Radio presets and it works well.

Kinda makes you wonder why Squeezebox server was shut down in the first place.

Thanks to Paul T and the other folks who posted here.

Is there any value to my SB unit?  I hate to toss it in the trash?

        G. Lance Bell

        Hope so.

When I get some time, I plan on exploring way to stream SirusXM or other stream service via our Squeezebox radios.

However, I may not be before winter.

      Sell it on ebay!

    • #2691794

Took some time today to see if there is a way to stream SiriusXM to our Logitech Squeezebox Boom radios.

The web site indicates that they sell Squeezebox radios but it also indicates that they are out of stock.   https://shop.siriusxm.com/support/logitech-squeezeboxtm-boom-network-music-player.html

The SiriusXM web site was no help and a call to customer service resulted in a circular set of questions about reactivating our existing SiriusXM radio. After five minutes of responding no to the same questions over and over again I gave up.

It may be time to look at alternatives to SiriusXM due to their impossible customer service.

    • #2691869

Install LMS and see if you can stream sirius.

      cheers, Paul

My preference is to stream SiriusXM directly from one of their servers vs running the feed via one of our computers.

Until you try it and report we can’t be sure how the feed works.

The whole point of this beautiful device for me was that it is standalone.

I could use it as alarm clock without my pc working.

Or put it anywhere with no pc to be found in the neigbourhood. And listen to some nice Tchaikovsky.

Now it looks like my beloved Squeezebox has been reduced to a musicbox?

      O tempora, o mores!

      I’m sad.

      • #2694229

It wasn’t really stand-alone, it relied on an LMS box on the internet, which has been turned off. Now you need the LMS box on your local network instead.

        cheers, Paul

While continuing to search for a way to stream programing directly from our router to our Squeezeboxes, I have come up with an alternate use for the radios – soundbars for televisions and computers.

Our Squeezeboxes have 3.5mm line in plugs on their back panels.

Via the line in plugs you can connect a MP3 player, portable CD player, or other audio device.

When turned on, the Squeezebox Boom will automatically detect the connection and reproduce the sound coming from the external source.

I have just discovered this thread and am seeking advice regarding a Logitech Squeezebox Duet setup I have. Nice to know I am not alone………..
I have a significant ITunes library on a computer in the study, and had set up the Squeezebox unit in Bridge mode, ie the main box on ethernet in a loungeroom with the audio fed in to a stereo amplifier. Although I used it to stream internet radio, that was not my main purpose, that being to simply stream the ITunes library to the lounge sound system. As I have an internet radio alternative, I am trying to simply restore the library streaming function.
I have LMS 7.7.4 I think, installed on the PC running as admin. Currently the controller can not connect to the house network due to the shutdown. I am certainly no expert in any of this, and am seeking advice how to move forward.
Any advice would be appreciated 🙂

I don’t think anyone here has managed to make LMS work yet, so yo may be better off asking on the LMS site.

I just discovered this thread (searching for something else!) and I find it odd that it hasnb’t been answered fully.

The Squeezebox hardware, firmware and server still live!  For many years now (since Logitech abandoned it) there has been a thriving community continually updating the server based on the original code, and also updating the firmware on some devices like the Squeezebox radios.  I myself have 3, plus a ‘TOUCH’  – all working on a local server (which can be your laptop, NAS or even a rapsberry pi), which is simply selected instead of the old ‘Mysqueezebox’ web site.  The newer version of software and firmware have removed that dependency entirely. The LMS has been renamed ‘Lyrion Music Server’ and you can find all the info you need at the official site:
      https://lyrion.org/
There is also a very helpful community forum
      Forums – Squeezebox : Community : Forums
      Hope this helps someone.

Is there a way this discussion thread can start with the latest? Been keeping an eye on any solution to my now-stranded three Logitech Squeezeboxes but it’s frustrating to scroll down for the latest info all the time. Thanks for considering.

Is there a way this discussion thread can start with the latest?…it’s frustrating to scroll down for the latest info all the time.

Yes, there is, but you have to be signed in to use it.

For those who have accounts here and sign in to the site, there’s an item that shows up, next to a topic’s listing. That item says “new reply” in white letters over a green background. There’s also a little square balloon icon with three dots in it. Clicking the balloon icon will take you to the first post that was made after the last time you logged in.

Sorry, this isn’t available if you’re not signed in but it is available with a free account here.

What is available to anyone is a link at the top of the topic’s listing that says “This topic has 74 replies, 7 voices, and was last updated 5 minutes ago.” in the case of this topic. The sentence has a light blue background, and the very end of the sentence that shows just how long ago the topic was updated is a clickable link that should take you directly to the latest post. BUT, you’ll have to navigate your way from there to read any other posts that have occurred since the last time you checked the topic. The only change from topic to topic is the last-updated time, as that obviously changes with every post and reply added to a given topic.

I hope this helps a bit. We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic, and please pardon the interruption.

Still looking for a way to recover our Squeezebox radios.

      • #2703813

Kathy, have you tried installing LMS on a test machine? There are lots of people “out there” claiming to have full functionality via LMS.

        cheers, Paul

          Paul T

No, I have not tried installing LMS on one of our computers.

We have enough computers around the place that if we want to stream via a PC we can simply play the sound via an attached set of speakers/sound bar.

When I have time, I will be contacting a number of streaming services such as SirusXM to see if we can logon to one of their servers via our router/modem thereby avoiding streaming via a PC.

    • #2706086

Can I clarify something please; I have had Logitech Media Server running on a pc for many years and I would like to move it onto one of our Synology NAS drives. Is there a way of exporting the settings from the PC version to the NAS version?

I take it that after doing this, I will need to point my boomboxes at the new IP, and possible adjust some port settings? Is there a document or comprehensive thread (on here/elsewhere) that details the moves.

As somebody else mentioned, I use a couple for streaming BBC radio, for music streaming I use Roon and then I have a couple of Touchs as end points.

It works well for me, but they are both different needs, radio v streaming music.

Thanks for the time and effort keeping these devices very much alive and current, I still think that there is nothing to touch (no pun) them.

The rewind feature on the radio is very useful.

      Thanks all – Terry

There’s a note about installing on Docker on the NAS (at LMS), but I’ve not seem anything on settings.

Is anyone using the Lyrion Music Server to stream internet radio stations to their Logitech Squeezebox Boom radio?

If so, how is it working?

      https://lyrion.org/

      • #2746738

        Hey there!

I never used my Squeezebox directly with the mysqueezebox.com service, since I got them (in 2011), I use a local LMS; formerly Logitech now Lyrion. I mostly listen to internet radio stations without any problem.
A USP of the whole Squeezebox/Slimdevices Techstack is, that it was and will be free as in free speech. Everything you need you can get from open source projects, inlcuding new firmware for your players (-> lyrion.org).
Very few other systems offer a multi-room-synced playback of music (apart from Sonos, I actually do not know any other system).

There are several projects that make your life easy, e.g. head to https://www.picoreplayer.org/ and set up your local server without hassle.
Imho its either that – spending time and a few bucks on a dyi-solution – or throw it away and buy a new radio/device whenever the company that sold it decides to discontinue it. But then please do not complain about it that Logitech want to force you to buy a new product. I do not know about any successor. They simply discontinued everything and gave it to the OSS community, which is actually a pretty noble move.

In this sense, the squeezebox/lyrion ecosystem is the best there is at the moment for a tinker-enabled long-lasting solution where high-quality hardware is available at low cost on ebay.

        just my 2Cts.

I’m sorry that you are having so much problem with getting something setup to continue enjoying your devices.  I’ve been using SqueezeBox devices since 2005, before mysqueezebox.com was even a thing.  I had/have an extensive digital music collection, so I never had any intent of listening to Internet Radio, and setup Squeezebox Server (as it was known then – now LMS) on my music server right away.

Everyone that says that the Boom/Radio were “standalone” missed the fact that the firmware in these devices simply had a special LMS setting that pointed to a highly customized LMS server that Logitech ran to feed you music, instead of you running your own.  No SqueezeBox player was ever “standalone”.  And, I’m sad to say, after a few hours of searching on the Internet, there are no pre-installed, plug-n-play LMS servers that can be purchased and run out-of-the-box.  After the shutdown of mysqueezebox.com, a missed opportunity for sure.  That closest you’ll find are Synology and QNAP NAS boxes that have LMS as a package that can be installed using their package managers.  Your best bet would be to post on https://forums.lyrion.org/ and find someone local to you that could help you get things up and running (whether it be installing on a laptop/pc/android phone/etc. …).

To make this absolutely clear to everyone here:  To continue using your SqueezeBox devices after the shutdown of mysqueezebox.com, you WILL HAVE TO SETUP YOUR OWN SERVER. You can not get around this requirement.  There is no amount of modding of the Boom/Radio that will get past this.  If you are unwilling/unable to do this, then there is a vast community of people who are doing this and will gladly purchase your used hardware on eBay.  Everytime I hit my local shops that have used electronics, I grab every Squeeze device I find, so I’ve got quite the collection now (as SO MANY people just dumped their hardware after the Logitech server shutdown, and they go for a steal, though I have purchased hardware on eBay for much more in the past before the thrift shops started getting devices lately).

I’ve been using Squeezeboxes for probably twenty years and always loved the system. As a long-term user of a local server, I have never used (and therefore don’t miss) the service Logitech provided and I can confirm that Internet radio works well through Lyrion running locally. I can listen to the same or different stations on different devices simultaneously and I can even pause or rewind radio streams (for the BBC – not sure about others), including rewinding to a point before actually I started listening. I also use it to listen to (paid) Spotify. Control is as before, using the devices themselves, but there is a web interface which allows more complicated tasks to be undertaken.

Whilst I had fairly negative feelings about the cancellation of the product line, I think it’s worth pointing out that this ocurred in 2011 and Logitech continued to provide their online version of LMS for 13 years afterwards (longer than they provided the products: they bought Slim Devices in 2006, I think). They have also paid a member of staff over this period to maintain and even develop the software further (although I suspect he did an amount of this on his own time too).

Once set up, LMS can be pretty much forgotten about if you want to. As has been pointed out, it runs perfectly well on a low-powered computer, such as the Raspberry Pi (which will run off a phone charger) or on a network storage system like a Qnap or Synology, which is particularly straightforward becuase they use Docker, which is a software packaging system. That means (as I understand it – I haven’t used one of these devices) installation can be done in only a couple of clicks.

As has already been said, I’m fairly confident in echoing the belief that you cannot – and never will be able to – connect a Squeezebox device directly to a radio service like SiriusXM. The devices are simply too stupid to allow that possibility, having been designed to let the server do all their processing.

Many people are still developing software (and hardware) for these devices. One thing you get with a local server is access to the vast array of plugins for different use-cases and services.

Kathy, I hope you find osmething that works for you. I’d heartily recommend running LMS locally, and I’d suggest you do it on a low-powered, dedicated computer (I keep mine in the cupboard under the stairs with the router) rather than a PC, but I understand that tinkering with these things is not for everyone… and if you aren’t familiar with Linux, there is a definte learning curve attached to that route. Running it temporarily on a PC is a good way to try it out, of course.

If you have a Synology or other NAS in your home already that supports Docker, that should be a much easier option. Plenty of poeple on the slimdevices forum will offer you help if you ask, however you decide to do it.
