• SpyBot 1.4 Won’t Immunize

    Hi All,
Just recently began to have a problem with SpyBot 1.4. It will not immunize beyond the initial immunization. Includes are up-to-date, and all other aspects of the program seem to be working just fine. It’s immunized (at least, the main immunization is done), but when I click to immunize the remaining 277 or so items, SpyBot just hangs, and I have to kill it with TaskMan. None of my other anti-spyware apps report any problems, and are all current. Uninstalling S&D 1.4, then reinstalling doesn’t solve the issue. Have tried that several times, both in and out of Safe Mode. There do not seem to be any others who have this issue, at least, it’s not mentioned in the S&D forum. So, could there be an issue with another malware app, something that’s preventing S&D from fully immunizing? Does this sound like a corrupt file somewhere? Other ideas? I’m stumped, for a change… Am running SpySweeper 4.5, AdAware 1.06SE, CA EZ Antivirus 7.0.5.3, SpywareBlaster 3.4, CW Shredder 1.18, CleanCache 3.1, ZoneAlarm Pro 6.0.667.000, and a fully patched XP Pro SP2 system. No new software except Office SP2 and NET Framework 2. So, does anyone have any experience with SpyBot not immunizing, or, if not, could anyone hazard a guess as to what’s going on? Any suggestions would be gratefully and gracefully accepted.

Spybot 1.4 immunises without apparent problems on several XP Pro machines and one 98SE I use. Presumably you’ve tried a complete uninstall and reinstall?

Yes, I have done that, and get the same results. The installs seem to go swimmingly, until I go to immunize beyond the basic immunization.

Edited: I did solve the problem. By shutting down both ZoneAlarm Pro and the new SpySweeper 4.5, I was able to fully immunize SpyBot 1.4. Since I’d tried immunizing in Safe Mode (when ZoneAlarm was not running), I presume there is a slight conflict between SpySweeper 4.5 and the immnize function within SpyBot 1.4 that did not occur with previous versions of SpySweeper. At any rate, temporarily shutting down SpySweeper 4.5 allowed for full immunization. As Inspector Clouseau would say, “The case is sol-ved.”

I’m glad you solved the problem!

I put on a (crippled) version of Spyware Doctor from a magazine CD, but took it off sharpish when I found that it occasionally caused the CPU to go to 100%! And stay there… It wasn’t worth the bother of trying to find out where the problem lay.

Thanks for posting back with your findings – there seems to be rumblings about conflicts at both CastleCops and WildersSecurity.

Thanks, Leif. I thought I’d been thorough in my Googling, but, apparently, the Wilders threads escaped me. I was glad to have read that others are also experiencing SpyBot immunization problems if the new version of SpySweeper is installed, and that SpySweeper has problems with SpywareBlaster. Here is what popped up when I enabled all protection in SpywareBlaster 3.4. Needless to say, I allowed SpywareBlaster to make changes, and allowed it to do so in the future. With any luck, WebRoot will patch the problem asap.
