This weekend I was working on a document and, when complete, ran a spelling and grammar check. The document was one I had begun writing from scratch about two weeks and nobody else had accessed. When I ran the check, Word started checking in Belgian French, a language I don’t speak and have never used. No matter how often I changed the language (Tools, Language, Set Language), the sysstem persisted in returning to Belgian French for this, and only this, document. I tried several approaches including copying and pasting the document into another document that brought up English, saving as a *.rtf file, closing, and reopening (Word as well as the file). Nothing helped, that document always returned to Belgian French for spelling checks. Then, several days later, I reopened the document to work on it further and, voila’, it spell checked in English and has done so since.

Has anyone else had this kind of bizarre behavior in Word?

It sometimes happens to me, and usually I can work around it by selecting the whole document with a and resetting the language. I also uncheck the option “Detect language automatically”.
I put it down to my frequent changes of keyboard language, but obviously this doesn’t apply to you. Nevertheless, it could have something to do with the keyboard drivers.

One possible cause is if you have somehow managed to assign a language to a paragraph style. Have a look at the styles you are using and check that they don’t have associated languages.

Thanks. In my frustration I may have done one or more of the things you suggested and the situation cleared up. However, it seems like a piece of bad design when setting the language through the Tools menu doesn’t cause the change to take effect. I guess it’s just another instance of MS knowing, better than we users know, what we really want.
