      Anyone here use Vista?

    • #23542

Yep, several people in fact. Some of them also use Win10 – and several are supporting Vista machines.

I do feel kind of bad for Vista. With its service packs and updates it was actually quite solid. But sadly the damage to its reputation was done.
Fun Fact: Windows 7 shares most of its code with Vista.
For me personally, Vista isn’t something I’d use. Maybe in a VM, but not as my day to day OS because a lot of programs are dropping support. Vista support itself is ending 8 months from Friday.

Thanks Woody, KB3198234 speeded up the Vista Windows updates. Thank you!!!

yes, as a personal “office-typewriter” machine

Thanks, it worked up to 12 December. It doesn’t work now. What should we do now to speed up updates? I wanna run my old Vista lappy til April if I can…

      From ER:

And it looks like the KB3204723 security updates from MS security bulletin MS16-151
are the new Windows Update win32k.sys “speed-up” fixes for Windows Vista & Server 2008
      https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/ms16-151
Once again, KB3204723 is a new temporary “speedup” patch that will work from Dec. 13, 2016
      to Jan. 9, 2017.

Two of my family’s PCs use Windows Vista still. I support them through my WSUS setup. I can’t justify telling them to spend $$$ for a new operating system (Vista wasn’t eligible for the free Windows 10 upgrade) when the OS is still in extended support. They have been told that they will have to either buy a newer copy of Windows or move to Linux when it hits end of support. They just haven’t decided which way to go.

Until it stops getting security patches, I will let them run it. Between the security patches, modern web browser, and the hardware firewall I maintain at their house, they’ve never had any problems with Vista.

Hi Woody… If I manually install KB3204723 to speed up Windows Update (Vista x64), do I need to manually install the previous patches too (KB3198234, KB3191203)?

Your posts are very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

I’m n ot sure – haven’t used Vista in forever – but I’m sure somebody here will be able to tell you.

They each address different issues in different security bulletins.

I would install all three, from oldest to newest.

Steve, use WUMT with the option Include superseded selected and scan against Windows Update in the list. The scan should be fast, the fastest possible for your machine regardless of patches installed previously.
Install only the most recent patches in the list for one month – all of them.
      Repeat again few times.
You will get to a stage where you will not have to keep the option include superseded selected, because the scans will be very fast.
Install everything in the list, except for Skype, Silverlight, MSE (if you don’t use it) or drivers.

Hi Steve, these all failed at my old Vista x32,
and gave up hope that this will be okay. After april (4th?) this year Vista is not supported anymore by M$ and I will have to buy some new laptop to do the simple office jobs ‘-(

Didnt work here too, endless scanning, the offline scan too. Snif.

I feel for you Fred as I have been keeping my Vista x32 (my 1st computer ever) up to date by following the excellent advice on Woody’s forum.
I downloaded the KB3204723 x86 standalone patch ER suggested when it was 1st announced Dec 14 from the link provided here. I did nothing with it until the Def-Con went to 3 at the end of Dec.
Following procedure, 1st created restore point, then stopped Windows Update in services, then double clicked on downloaded standalone patch, waited till it checked and installed the patch which automatically called for restart.
After restart, and waiting for the installer to process the update by watching task mgr until all was quiet there, I then launched WU (kept at never check), and clicked check for updates. It took about 40 min but it did provide the list of Dec updates which all installed without incident. Checked WU again after updates processed watching task mgr, and WU said I was up to date.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to find the same info here come January patch Tuesday. I hope this helps, good luck!

Thank you Kevin1, you make my hopes grow, and will try the way you did. Regards 🙂 fred
