Hi,
We have a problem with large sheets for over 50 Mb. When trying to calculate Excel throws me out. Without leaving any trace of the file I was working with.
Furthermore, it takes a long time to calculate sheets somewhat under 50 Mb.
The question is: how to overcome this?
The notebook I’m working on is an Intel PIV 1,8 with 256 Mb (and yes, defragmented by Diskeeper all day long).
There’s plenty of HD-space.
TIA
George

50 MB still seems very large. You may have accumulated some slack space and/or garbage over the course of time. You can try various things (make a copy first, just in case, and check carefully that nothing is lost after the suggested steps before using the result):
- Save the workbook as HTML, close, reopen and save as XLS again (frankly, I’ve never tried it with a workbook anywhere near a large as yours)
- If you’ve got lots of code, run Rob Bovey’s code cleaner; you can download it from http://www.appspro.com/%5B/url%5D or http://www.bmsltd.ie/mvp/%5B/url%5D.

AskWoody PlusJune 3, 2003 at 10:19 am #682099Hans, thanx for your concern (bedankt).
I’ve tried to Save As Html, but there only remains 612 KB
I’m convinced there’s something wrong in the programming of the sheet.
But it takes too much time and money to solve it. As a work-around we’re gonna split the larger files.
I’s about numbers of employees. About 500 of them would make a file of 50 Mb.
Split this in 250-250 and there remain two files of about 30 Mb. That’s acceptable.
Thanks -

AskWoody PlusJune 3, 2003 at 2:15 pm #682166Was there something missing from the file after the save to HTML format? Depending on exactly what is being done, 612kb does not sound wrong for 500 employees. I have many files with 500 rows of data that are much smaller than 612kb. It may be that there is some corruption in the file that is causing it to bloat to 50mb, and that is what the save to HTML format is supposed to get rid of.
If there is something missing, can you describe what it is?

AskWoody PlusJune 3, 2003 at 6:50 pm #682254You did do the save to HTML format from XL 2000, not XL97? If it is XL 2000, then it sounds like there is something really corrupt in that workbook. XL 2000 should save just about everything that you can put into a workbook in HTML format.
If that is what has happened, my only suggestion is to rebuild the workbook.
