Hello All, I did a search at the lounge for spam. I guess this ‘spoofing’ is what is happening with me where it indicates I have mail delivery failure on a messae I supposedly sent (didn’t!).

I am home recovering from surgery on my left hand and the constant “beep” of new e-mail arriving finally woke me up – literally! Quit counting at 168 returned items marked “Mail Delivery System [MAILER-DAEMON@hrndva-mx-01.mgw.rr.com]” which basically tells says “The following message to was undeliverable. The reason for the problem: 5.1.0 – Unknown address error 550-‘5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: “blank”.com’. As I type I am now up to an additional 47 in my Norton AntiSpam Folder. Good grief. One thing I do notice is the notification from Norton AV that indicates “a recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked… click here for more Details and then of course the Norton AV choice “not recommended” is popping up more frequently. Did a system scan and all is ok. But I’m concerned … is there anything at all I can do to stop this madness … anything I should be doing?
    yikes

If someone else has gotten hold of your e-mail address and is now sending (spam) mails with your address as the sender, you’ll receive all the “undeliverable” notices. There is very little you can do about that, except setting up a rule that deletes all these “undeliverable” immediately.

Thanks HansV. I did do that but the messages go into my Norton Anti-Spam Folder, then I empty it every 15 minutes or so. I’m guessing that when someone forwarded e-mail they didn’t delete the e-mail addresses OR it was ‘glommed’ off a site or something. I HATE spammers!

So setting the Outlook rule didn’t work: went to my cable account e-mail provider on-line and set the rule for all messages sent to Bulk Items folder be deleted. I’ll deal with legit messages being deleted as they arise. Much easier than what I’m dealing with now – as I type this upwards of 500+ messages which are Undeliverable: all to same address, all with same content. Ugh.

Those “undeliverable” messages can also be virus vectors. It’s one of the methods used to infect computers by sending a message that implies it was sent from that machine. Make sure you have an active antivirus running and scanning your email. Since you received a boatload of those messages, I would also suggest doing a complete virus scan on your machine. This has happened to me and others in my office a few times. shrug I use Junk-Out for this purpose and set it to delete the expired junk mail daily or when I close Outlook.

Oh my, thanks Charlotte! I did upgrade Norton AV to 2005 and it usually resides in the status bar – I don’t see it there these days but assume it’s working in the background since the undeliverable messages are shunted to my Norton Spam Folder and from time to time the Norton Security Messages popup so it’s there – just not visible. I bypassed Outlook and logged into my account Rogers.com to set the spam to go directly to deleted since Outlook did not obey my Rules … presumably overwritten by Norton. I am now going to do a complete scan on my harddrive. I must figure out how to have Norton AV constantly ‘on-deck’ as it was previous to my 2005 update when I switched to Rogers cable. I’ll report back!

If you click on the options tab in AV, you should see checked:
              Enable Norton Auto Protect
              Start Auto protect on statup
Show Auto Protect icon in the tray.

Make sure all three are checked and you should be OK.
