space between header and body (Word 2000 SP3)

I thought I had this figured out somewhere on Page Setup, but it’s not in the document now and I can’t find out how I did it before. There’s a line at the bottom of the header (I don’t know how it got there because this isn’t my original) so if I just add a blank line at the bottom of the header it moves the line down and it’s still jammed up against the first line of text.

Also, how do I attach a template so it goes along with the document into someone else’s computer? I’m creating a .dot file for them. I see where I should tell them to “click Templates and Add-Ins on the Tools menu, and then clear the Automatically update document styles check box”. I found that in the Help, but I’m not sure WHEN they’re supposed to do that? Before they even try to open the document??

Hmm, maybe this is now a different question, but after I saved the .dot in a My Documents subfolder, I was NOT able to open a new document based on it. Even after I went to Tools/Templates and Add-ins to (try to) attach the template from that location. I don’t want to have to have it in the Word Templates folder because I want to send it to someone else to use on new documents. ???

With regard to the header/footer, you most likely added a horizontal line to the paragraph… simply remove the line (Border icon on Formatting toolbar or Format, Borders and Shading). If you want the line and a space afterwards, try using the Space After feature under Format Paragraph… you can define any space you want after the existing paragraph without using hard returns.

I think you may want to do a little reading/research before you dive into templates. Here is a KB article on Word’s templates locations. In order for a person to see a template in the Templates and Add-ins folder permanently, they must know to save it under the Startup folder of Word. This can be a difficult task to relay to anyone who is unaware of their Windows profiles and how Word works with templates.

Thanks, I agree that I need more research about templates BUT that KB was for 2003. Just a quick thank you and I’ll go dig around some more.

Yeah, I know, I’m still in the Dark Ages I probably could have eventually tracked down the official KB, but I sure appreciate the links to specific helpful sites like the MVPs.

Now, back to the space between the header and the top of the body….

Is it a space or line – sometimes terminology is key… I interpreted that there was a line in the header. If you are talking about a space (or Paragraph mark), once you view the header or footer and place no text, a space appears… you cannot remove it! Visually it frustrates people; however, it is not harming anything. If you do not like seeing it, turn off your Show/Hide near Zoom on your Standard toolbar. In the Page Setup, the header and footer space is defined – they should, in most cases, never be less than .25″ (newer printers may be able to print outside this edge of the paper; however, inkjet printers usually require more – my needs more than .25″ on the bottom!) – you’re not the only one living in the dark ages! Anyhow, ensure that the Page margins are not the same as the header/footer margins… you should leave at least .25″ between these two elements as well, i.e., if your top/bottom page margins are 1″, your footer should be .5″ or less… if you change the top/bottom margins to .5″, ensure that the header/footer is at least .25″… hope this helps… trish

Yes, indeed — terminology is pretty important, sorry. What I mean is that the body of the document starts immediately under the header. AND although the Show/Hide wasn’t the problem, it *was* in the margin settings in Page Setup, which is where I thought I was but couldn’t remember. The header has a graphic in it, so it’s larger than “usual” and was running past the 1″ that the page margins were set at. Rather than change the top margin of the header though, I increased the top margin of the page (body) and that let it start further down, leaving some white space between the bottom of the header and the top of the body. THANK YOU, that worked.
