• SP2 and RRAS MMC (XPp SP2)

    Hi folks,

Via Admin Pack for 2003 Server, I use a XPp PC to administer several Windows 2K servers. The 2003 admin pack doesn’t include a mmc for RRAS, so you have to create your own. Unfortunately, since installing SP2, using a RRAS mmc snap-in results in an error when loading the Remote Access Policies module; the error is as follows:

“An error occurred while trying to get information for an attribute. The stub received bad data.”

The error repeats until you kill MMC with Task Manager. I’m sure the error is because of the changes to DCOM in SP2?

Has anyone else come across this issue after upgrading to SP2? More importantly, anyone seen a fix?!

    TIA,

Have you checked the services that are disabled? SP-2 changed some seldom used networking services to be disabled.

        Hi,

I think that the only services that SP2 actually disables are “Alerter” and “Messenger”; whilst there are lots of modifications to others. I’m sure its a service modification which is causing this?

        Cheers,

            Yep, have now…

I understand most of it and think it must be either a DCOM or RPC issue. The solutions offered seem to involve lots of Registry changes, which don’t seem appropriate for our environment (we are upgrading to Windows 2003 server soon and will be able to use the full functionality of the 2003 admin pack).

Having searched on the web, I did find one discussion thread almost exactly the same as this one! The person in question has applied the DCOM and RPC registry changes and is still experiencing the problem? Nothing, as yet, on MSKB or Technet either.

            Thanks for all your help,
