A friend has downloaded some humorous wav files and tried to set them up in his SOUNDS folder in Control Panel – for mail notification as an example. When he clicks on the PREVIEW sound, it comes up with an error message which says that the file is either damaged or he should go to ADD/REMOVE programs and install AUDIO COMPRESSION. I checked and AUDIO COMPRESSION is already installed but to be safe, i uninstalled and reinstalled. The WAV sounds play just fine “outside” of the SOUNDS configuration process? Any suggestions??

Although they work outside of the sounds applet, WAV files can be encoded in several different formats. The only option you have if they don’t work is to download a different sound file, or a sound file editor such as GoldWave and save the sounds in a different WAV format. ADPCM, I believe, but I stand to be corrected on that since it’s been a long time!!

Solved the problem by downloading and installing CODEC. Thanks Mark.
