My Dell computer was running W11 23H2. This morning, I upgraded to 24H2. I am running Microsoft Outlook (came with Office 2023) as my email client. The sounds for “you received some mail” and “You have deleted an email” have changed. They are both standard Win11 sounds, such as “Asterisk”, which is Windows Background.wav, for instance. When I delete an email, the sound, which used to be pleasant, is now the original sound combined with a sort of “Exxh” stuck on the end of it. My hardware hasn’t changed; I have a SoundBlaster sound card, it so happens. Has anyone else heard of this? How can I fix it?

Start by checking that the drivers for your sound card are up to date.

Control Panel/Sound on the “Sound” tab you can assign sounds to actions. This may also be accessible in Settings, but I do not have 24H2.

I did check the drivers for my sound card, and they are up-to-date. Good suggestion, but I didn’t need new drivers.

I found a solution to the problem. My computer has built-in sound hardware on the motherboard, but as I said I am using a Soundblaster plug-in audio card. To solve the issue, I went in to Device Manager, selected the motherboard sound hardware, and disabled it. The problem is gone. Apparently, Windows 11 23H2 would completely ignore the motherboard sound hardware, but Windows 11 24H2 was trying to address or use that hardware, even though Windows told me that only sound device that was set up was the Soundblaster.
