Sound Card In Win 2K

My husband posted a message (under my name!) asking about changing IRQ settings because we can’t get ANY sound card to work with Windows 2000. We purchased 3 sound cards that are listed on the Microsoft site as being compatible, but none of them work. My husband has considerable computer experience, and he has built our computers, so he does know what he’s doing as far as installation. Do any of you know any trick for making a sound card work with Win 2K? My husband thought it was because everything is on IRQ9, but it seems Windows was made to share IRQ’s. Ok. Let them share. Something else must be causing the problem then. Any ideas????
