I have an an old Sony Walkman NWZ-E344 device that I connected to Windows 10 without issue about 2 yrs ago.   I tried again recently and it is not detected on any Windows 10 (1909) machine.   I’ve tried most of the suggestions from googling the issue

    1. reset the device with a paperclip reset
    2. tried different usb ports
    3. tried different cables (the cables are working because the device charges)
    4. downloaded transfer protocol from sony site
    5. installed mtppk12.exe mtpporting kit
    6. removed and reinstalled windows media player
    7. window\inf  wpdmtp.inf (mtp driver reinstall)

I have not tried removing the root hubs or formatting the device.   The later because my wife will kill me if she losing her stuff on it.   The first because the issue is not limited to my primary pc but all the pcs in my house.

The googled searches say to look for the triangle warning in device manager but my problem is … windows doesn’t detect the plug in of the usb for this device at all.    There are no triangles to troubleshoot, to reinstall the device drivers.   What do you do when Windows just doesn’t recognize when a device is connected?

It’s not just my machine … but 3 of them that are all at the latest windows version 1909.    And please suggestions to reinstall Windows will not be entertained.    I have a vanilla Windows 10 recent install that also doesn’t work.

Now I’m just curious … what do you do when a device is not at all detected by Windows 10 when connected via USB.

There may be a few extra things to try here, including a download link for Microsoft’s hardware and devices troubleshooter:

sony walkman player not being read by my windows 10 64 bit computer

If it appears as “Sony USB device” under Disk drives in Device Manager, then this is the updated link for Sony’s advice to correct that (mentioned with a broken link at the start of the second reply at that Microsoft Community answer):

How to confirm the portable player is recognized by the computer as a Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) device.

Thanks for the response.  I had not tried the troubleshooter for hardware … just ran it with high hopes but no change.    It’s not that this is one computer specific.   It’s all my PCs.   The device is simply not see by any of them.   There is nothing to click in device manager.   Nothing under disk drives, nor portable devices.   It’s like MTP has ceased to be found by Windows 10 now.

Did you check “View, Show hidden devices” in Device Manager at any stage?

MTP Not Working In Windows 10 – Media Transfer Protocol Error

(Just clutching at straws now really!)

      Yeah did that too.   🙂

I’m a reasonably experienced windows user who is normally the go to person to fix people’s computers.   That can be a headache but I’m stumped here.

I checked out the link about the registry.   Interesting that “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control/Class

did not have reference to portal devices but there were references in wow6432node but I don’t feel comfortable updating those.   I wonder if the link is not up to date with the latest version of windows.

I’m going to give up on this now.  All other devices are functioning fine on my pcs.   I would be curious if anyone has a windows 10 machine that has walkman showing up in device manager.

Ok  … so I remembered I have and old laptop that is still running Windows XP … old reliable XP.

I booted it up and let it run for a while as it had forgotten it’s date settings.

      I connected my problematic walkman.

      Wait for it.

      Nothing happened.

Windows XP doesn’t see it either.

So … I think the walkman is foobared.

      Probably a dead-end rabbit trail –
“3. tried different cables (the cables are working because the device charges)”
USB has 2 pairs of wires: 2 wires for power, 2 wires for signal.

Is it possible that, on the Walkman itself, the power pair is OK, but that one/both of the signal connections has failed? I don’t know how one would test this. Is there ANY other computer, preferably not Windows 10, that you could use for testing? It needn’t even be Walkman-supportive, just something that would show that there is a device connection.

OK, good thinking. You sneaked in your post while I was finishing my keying.
Take a good look at the signal connections; is there any corrosion that you can burnish off? Also, while a cable is in, try gently (or not) wiggling the plug. Of course, the Open may not be in the external connections but somewhere in an internal circuit path, or in an IC. Has the Walkman been dropped, or otherwise suffered abuse?

If a person would like to spend money another test method would be to use a good USB tester tool, making sure the tester has matching ports for your devices and cables.

(Also, a Live GNU/Linux distribution (Ubuntu) may be be able to detect the hardware.)

And just because the usb cables can charge the walkman does not mean the data lines are good, they use different pins. BTW does the walkman give any indication that it sees a connection, `[Connecting] or [Connected USB (MTP)] does not appear when connected to the
computer with the supplied USB cable` from page 93 of manual.

      🍻

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

I have the same issues I have Sony NWZ-E463 walkman. It was working fine the one day when I tried to connect it to my laptop it appeared that the laptop can’t recognize it. I tried another PC , then my friends PC ,then  my office PC . But nothing helped. I am very sad. Because I loved it Very much.

The same thing happened to me. My Sony Walkman stopped being recognized on any computer with Windows operating system, but it is recognized on Linux!
I searched everywhere, but I couldn’t find anything explaining about it!
I have no idea what that might be.

If I had a guess – an update.  How old is the unit?  Sometimes you just have to move on from technology.

Two (small, free, portable) tools I use to troubleshoot USB connections:

USBDeview – This will show you whether the device is detected by the OS (and allow you to clear out all the previous history of attached USB devices that is stored in the registry).

USB Device Tree Viewer – This will show your device’s USB controllers, the ports attached to them and what external devices are detected as being connected to them.

      Hope this helps…
