Does anyone know anything about SUS? I am in the process of testing it for use in our LAN. I have the server up and running on a test machine and it appears to be sync’ing OK. During my testing, I also edited the Windows Update Policy on the DC’s GPO. Several days later I realized that Automatic Updating is grayed out on our client machines. Upon checking the documentation, I found that this is expected.

However, I decided that I needed to do some additional testing and subsequently disabled the WU policy, expecting that AU would no longer be grayed out on the client machines. This is not the case. I have rebooted both the client and the DC, but AU is still grayed. I then removed the wuau.adm template and refreshed the Policy on the client. Everything is still grayed out. Am I missing something? I appreciate any help anyone can give.

Have you checked out the documentation at Software Update Services Home ? You should still be able to configure AU with GPO. See the SUS deployment white paper at the site.

I have all the documentation I can find. The operative word you used is “should”. As far as I know, I done everything that needs to be done to return AU to client configurability, but it is still grayed out. If you know of anything else that I haven’t tried, I’d be eternally grateful.

Can you post what the policies set to now on the client PC?

I’m not sure what you want, but I’ve included a screen shot of my local GPO and what templates are installed.

              Russell,
If the SUS Deployment White Paper from MS I think the registry keys for AU are listed. Have you checked the keys on the client PC? If you install the admin template you should be able to configure AU via GPedit as you need.

One helpful piece of information would be “What happens if you manually navigate to the Windows Update site”?

If there is a policy in force then you should see a message telling you so.
If Windows Update works then something else is going on.
